Let Me Spend My Heaven

My body's been a dying
Since the day that I was born.
My spirit's been a trying
To escape its prison ward.
I've been battered by convictions
From the left and from the right.
Claim to be the proper voice-
Experts run by fright.

Told me not to love too much
Or I might wake up dead
While they wallowed in suspicion
Impaired by pomp and dread.
I couldn't live in fear of hell,
But heaven's hope to see.
Now I contemplate my passing
And what might become of me.

Just let me spend my heaven
Doing good on earth.
With Therese, spreading roses
Till each soul knows its worth.
I don't need a halo.
This harp, it hurts my back.
The clouds give me a fear of heights
So wings I'll gladly lack.

I take nothing with me
Of my ribbons or my bows.
Just seed of weeds that flower
Where the wind would have them grow.
Is there any part of me
That can be left behind
Any ray or spark of hope
Or healing for the blind.

Let me spend my heaven
Doing good on earth.
With Therese, spreading roses
Till each soul knows its worth.
I don't need a halo.
This harp, it hurts my back.
The clouds give me a fear of heights
So wings I'll gladly lack.

I'm no more than a thimble filled
And floating on the sea.
Tiniest of ripples in the
Land of powers that be.
My voice is just a whisper.
My light a tiny stick.
Bears a spark of inspiration
With each and every flick.

So let me spend my heaven
Doing good on earth.
With Therese, spreading roses
Till each soul knows its worth.
No I don't need a halo.
This harp, it hurts my back.
The clouds give me a fear of heights
So wings, I'll gladly lack.
