You are Father

You’re not my dad,
Though you have been often.
The moments when I needed advice,
Or a shoulder to cry on,
Or an ear to bend,
You’ve been there.
You’ve cared.

Your daughters are my sisters;
I know them well.
So often I wish we were closer,
These girls and I.

You’ve been my protector,
My guide,
My advisor,
My encourager,
My strength,
Too many times to count.
You are the man I wish my dad could have been,

Uncle holds no meaning for me;
You are father.

Author notes

My mother's brother, my uncle has been an incredible father figure to me.  He has shown me how a father should be, and whenever there is turmoil in our family, I can usually count on him to be strong and steady.  I love you, Doug.

    Sorry it took so long for me to return the favor,been real busy.Anyways, I REALLY liked this poem,I can relate (kinda) my father wasn't a father either,but I also didn't have anyone I could call father. I'm glad you had someone to take you under thier wing,not everyone gets that perfect chance.Hope everything is going well now. Keep up the good work!

    Wow, that is incredible. Kind of sad how sometimes we can count on other people more then the people who are supposed to be our parents. Great job

    Hi, lovely poem very touching and sweet, just one small point the title and ending would be better to say you are my father, or you are my father figure, or The father I would like to have, or something like this, as you are father does not sound right, hope this has been of help to you, all the best, a lovely write, hugs Di

    I like it. It is full of emotion and I can tell you and your uncle are very close. It's neat to see that kind of relationship through a poem. Keep writing! =)

    I adore this poem because of the fact that a dad is a dad, but no one else can be. A step-dad can be a father, but no one can replace that dad (even if he's stupid). This was a wonderful poem because it's meaning and the feeling put into it. Good luck!

    loved it

    Wow, that is so sweet. I'm sorry your dad is not really a dad. But it's nice that you have a father figure to make up for it. My brother is substancally older than me but he is not my brother. My cousin is my big brother. He knows me more than my own brother who barely visits. I still love my brother but I love my cousin more. Man that tears me to say that but it's true. Good write. You rock.

    Hey!
    Thank you so much for entering, this is exactly what I was trying to get across, see, long story short my daughters father may be her father but hes not her dad, does that make sense? Hopefully one day I will meet a man to be her 'daddy' but until then she has her uncles and cousins and most of all my dad looking after her with me.
    Thanks for entering my contest and good luck..

    ps any man can make a baby, but it takes a real man to raise a child.
