My Father (Cento Triolet)

The greatest man I never knew
Would often give me too much praise.
My father thought my love was true,
The greatest man I never knew.
Yet I was often someone who
Took love as just a common phrase.
The greatest man I never knew
Would often give me too much praise.

The greatest words I never heard,
I can't say what they ought to be.
I wanted something so absurd --
The greatest words I never heard.
But now my lesson has been learned;
My eyes now open, and I see
The greatest words I never heard,
I can't say what they ought to be.

Author notes

The lines of this cento triolet are taken from Reba McEntire's The Greatest Man I Never Knew.  It is in Iambic Tetrameter (at least I hope it is!).
Like Reba, I have written this about my father.  I never realized how much he loved me until he died.

    Sad and Beautiful!!!

Deborah, This was so sad and yet so beautiful too. I really ache here as I know this feeling. This flowed wonderfully and the rhythm and rhyme were perfect, what a brilliant Cento Triolet that you have chosen to share with us.
May we all have peace in knowing that they see how much we love them even though we can't see them here on earth. We will be reunited with them one day and their loving arms will be open to us all. God bless you and thank you again for this.
Love and blessings for you my friend, today and always.
You definitely have a standing ovation to go along with my applause here. Joyce

hmm that is wat everyone tends to overlook at some point or the other-Love. it's very sad to know about u n ur father. plz don't get depressed over this. but love him the way should have now, it doesn't matter if he is not here, alive in a physical form. but somewhere in God's land may b he is there, loving u back. his soul is always alive. pray for him, miss him and love him, the way he deserves!that'll help i guess.
    thanx for sharing.

I know exactly how you feel, strange how you dont know their love until they are gone. I also know the song well, another of my fav country song is "Daddy's hands" that one came out when my father passed away suddenly years ago, I still cant just listen to that song. great job here, hope you do well in this contest, I am not sure about the Iambic Tetrameter, not schooled to well in poetry, but I think you have done a wonderful job.~~tracy
