That's What Poets Do....2006

The old year's on its way out now.
The new one's at the door.
What has been done is history...
The future lies before.
No matter where our paths may lead
One thing I know as true...
Whatever comes, we'll write it down
'Cause that's what poets do.

We may have tragedies befall
We may have joys bestowed.
We'll use our love of writing as
A way to ease our load.
We'll share our joy with others and
Our pain and sadness, too.
We'll spread our lives on printed page
'Cause that's what poets do.

Perhaps we'll gain some comfort from
The sharing of our grief.
Perhaps our words of laughter will
Bring others some relief.
Our writings will allow us to
Exchange our points of view
And learn from one another's ways
'Cause that's what poets do.

So greet the new year with a smile
An opportunity
To write a host of brand new verse
Into your diary.
Together we will march into
The year 2006
Cause that's what poets do
And that's how poets get their kicks.

Happy new year to you too (even though it's February already). I liked the poem because it's funny and because it shows different aspects of life.

LOL... What a refreshing poem, Michael It pretty much says it all in this humorous, somewhat serious piece.

It's very expressive of what we poets go through, and always manage to make it through each day as a result.

I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful poem for poets

Thank you, Lee, and I confess Ihaven't done much of that myself. No wonder Walden had to live in the woods to write...the real world is much too busy! Hope you had great holidays!

As always, your poem flows with excellent rhythm & rhyme. This one made me feel a little guilty though 'cause I haven't picked up a pen to write anything for months! Guess I had better get busy and "do what poet's do"! Thanks for an enjoyable read and a little inspiration.

Very true, sir! Your site has been watched by me, waiting eagerly for the next poem of yours to be posted, and it is absolutely wonderful. It really does work that way with poets, because we express ourselves through words, and the shapes on the paper of them show how we feel. Well done!

    Michael,

I always smile when I think of you--your humor and wit,
that you share your wisdom, too, never hurts a bit.

And, sometimes, the mischief makes one forget their woes,
though what might be bugging you, you rarely do disclose.

The New Year's hope is to heal all the world's wrong,
and the search to claim the good which keeps each other strong.

We have need of new beginnings, in spite of Auld Lang Syne,
but the joy you have given me, I'm keeping, Friend of Mine.

The next few hours are fleeting, till fireworks light the sky,
still, where the light really shines, does not meet the eye.

Because the lispings of your heart seeks out what is true,
your heart sometimes kisses mine, 'cause that's what poets do!

    Best wishes for 2006, Mike
    Stay well!

    Karen

Very apt for the season, and said with good sense of rhythm, wh too is quite apt for this party time. Perhaps u cd set it to music. The rhyme is quite natural and unforced. That's how poetry shd be!

You are telling it like it is. For me, the part that made it so honest is the part where you said that "we use our love of writing to ease our load". That is the exact reason that I started writing. Every time that I felt like I was going to be overwhelmed, it helped to write a poem about it. You have a very interresting poem. It pays homage to the very community you belong to.

Your poem reminded me of this quote from Thomas Berger. "Why do writers write? Because it isn't there."

This is a perfect way to look at the new year. The rhythm is excellent, and I love the repetition and general concept. Great write, thanks for sharing!

I can't think of a better way to get this point across, yes, its just what poets do. We write about the things that make us happy, we write about the things that don't - we write about things we can't seem to comprehend, like the death of a child or the loss of a job, we write about things we can't always express any other way. A well-crafted write can convey intensity and depth of feeling that we might never be able to express otherwise.

You do this very well, Michael.
