You were the only one I
Noticed on the first day of choir.
You had a kind smile,
Sweet voice,
Friendly attitude,
And you were cute.
I didn’t just want to be
Your friend,
I wanted to
Be your lover
For all time.
It didn’t matter that
You were in eighth grade
And I was in fifth;
You were my dearest friend.
After every concert,
We would hug, not caring
What others thought.
My sister said that you
Were a freak and ran away
From you,
But I
Eagerly awaited your
Warm embraces and
Sweet high-fives.
Now that
We’re older,
We don’t really do that stuff anymore.
Why did we stop?
Was it because “she”
Would tease us?
Was it because the older kids
Frowned on it?
Or was it because you were scared
Of showing your love
Of me?
Or did you fall out of love
With me?
Maybe you did.
Whenever I see
You with your gal,
Locked arm in arm,
I hurt so much,
But when I stroked
Your butt,
You said nary a word.
You always compliment
My singing,
Even when I protest that I
Sing crappy.
You always say “Hi”
To me,
Try to make me feel
Warm and fuzzy inside,
And will always be
My friend.
I just wish we could be
More than that.
