A Christmas Gift

A Christmas Gift

It’s hard to give a Christmas gift
                    original and new;
A gift that will fill your deepest needs,
               and answer my prayers for you.
But, if I could give you the perfect gift
it would be something to have and to hold,
Something to cheer your weary days
                and to keep you from the cold.
It would be something precious to take with you
               through all the uncertain years,
To give you strength when you need it most
                 and to calm your wildest fears.

I’d give a gift like the angels brought
                  on that first Christmas night,
When the valleys rang with songs of praise
              and the hills were bathed in light;
Peace and Love and Joy and Hope
                    brought down from God on high,
By a storm of angels that swooped and swirled
                              against a purple sky!
The promise of all the ages, on that first gift depends....
A light that shines for eternity... and a song that never ends!

Through all the doubtful days to come
                  may God wrap you in His love.
May He light the way through your darkest night
                      and guide you from above!
May He comfort you in your time of need
              and smile when your heart is light!
May He lighten your load when the day is long
             and watch with you through the night!

May He grant you the comforts of hearth and home,
                   and all your needs fulfilled;
The courage that grows from faith in Him
                and the Joy that can’t be stilled!
Good health and peace and length of days
                    with all your loved ones near...
A light to shine in your darkest hour
                       and a song of hope and cheer.

    Thank you so much for your kind words! I wrote this to send out with family cards a few years ago and it is not the sort of thing I usuakky write -- but it was well received.

    Wow! You are right! I suppose I have just been too close to it to see that but I will take another look -- maybe I will have a two-for!

    An enjoyable poem with a wonderful message – I am not crazy about the layout. I felt that the first two stanzas described the intended gift perfectly – the last two were almost a second poem to me – But that is just me LOL - A great seasonal write – Albert.

    Doug, this is truly beautiful! It is a Christmas wish that anyone would consider a true gift from the heart. The flow is wonderful-not a hitch anywhere. The rhyme is perfect, and the meaning behind this poem is truly a treasure. Wonderful write! If I could applaud more than one, I'd never stop! Hugs, Patricia

    A passionate poem of faith.

    This poem presents your intention to bring the gifts of song and love (so contrastive with those of the Magi) and then the poem makes a smooth transition to a blessing upon us. I agree with critquers above me on the beauty of this poem.
