The Song and The Light

The Song and The Light
       (A Christmas Message)

The manner of His birth
was un-remarkable, they say;
But, the power of His coming
is transforming men today!
Homeless... in a rented stable
He lay that first long night;
But a choir of caroling angels
filled the winter sky with light–
Filled the darkened night with glory–
filled the silent void with song–
With bright promise filled the heart of man’
where dark had ruled so long!

It was tax time... folks were busy
with a “Most important thing”,
So most people missed the coming of
The Child, Our Christ, Our King!
But, “Certain Shepherds” saw the light
and heard the glorious song ring out,
And said, “Let us go and see this child
the angels sing about!”
They saw the majesty of kingship
in His face, so sweetly mild,
Beheld The Grandeur of The Godhead
in the likeness of a child;
And they went their way in wonder
at the strangeness of the night,
But, held in their hearts The promise
of The Song and of The Light!

Through this, our night, still rings The promise–
(Oh God, let us have ears to hear!)
Let His “I am with you always!”
Say to us, “Your King is near!”
Let us– when we face the darkness–
–see the light and hear the song;
And let the comfort of His presence
make our feeble hearts grow strong!
His Love was the message of the miracle–
(Oh God, let us have eyes to see!)
The wonder— not that He changed the world,
but... that He changes you and me!

Now, in our seasonal celebrations
with our bells and trees and snow,
We may miss the Christmas Message
in the glitter and the show:
So, let us hold in our hearts the promise
when the night grows dark and still...
And wish one another what they wished all men;
Great glad tidings of love and joy,
Peace... Peace... Peace... and Great Goodwill!!
