How Christmas Looks In My Mind's Eye

It is Christmas Eve day and here I sit staring out the window,
At the snow covered hillside and all of nature's beauty.
I can only imagine just how beautiful it all is,
I don't have the precious gift of sight!

I am a Christmas miracle who is lucky to be alive!
So for me Christmas means much more than just presents.
For me it is about celebrating the precious gift of life,
And being with the ones I so dearly love.

I love being curled up by the fireplace sipping on a cup of hot chocolate,
While grandma is in the kitchen preparing Christmas dinner.
Oh how those wonderful aromas fill the air!
This truly is my favorite time of the year.

Even though I may not have the gift that so many others have,
I still know what Christmas looks like!
I have all of the beautiful colors, smells and the sounds memorized,
They are all stored in my mind's eye.

The wonderful aroma of the turkey and all of the fixings,
The smell of cinnamon coming from the sweet potato pie,
It all reminds me of the love that went into each and every dish!
The kind of love that binds and brings us all closer together.

It makes me so happy and grateful to be alive,
Christmas really is a joyous time of the year.
What makes it even better is knowing that we are all so blessed,
After all we are alive and well, and have a lot of love in our hearts!

As I sit in my favorite spot by the fireplace,
Thinking about what Christmas really means and how happy it makes me,
Grandma sits down beside of me and put her arm around me.
I can feel the love and warmth of her touch and it means so much to me!

We just sit there as she watches the lights on the tree twinkle.
I began to describe to her how it all looked in my mind's eye,
How the beautiful colors all just seem to go together so perfectly!
Especially the reds, blues and greens.

I like how the tinsel and garland just seem to blend in,
Then there are the beautiful ornaments that each mean so much to us all!
The many strands of lights twinkle and light up the room,
With the most beautiful hues of red, green, blue, orange, and yellow.

She agrees and acts kind of amazed,
I guess she wondered how I knew what the Christmas lights looked like!
I guess you don't need the gift of sight to know what things look like,
Just rely on your other senses and you will do just fine!

As I am headed to bed grandma gave me one last hug,
I remember feeling so much happiness and love.
It's so good to be alive and have such a wonderful family.
I head to bed to wait for Santa to arrive!

When I awake, I realize it is Christmas Day.
I jump out of bed and rush into the living room,
Anxious to see what Santa had brought for me!
I may not be able to physically see but remember my mind sees for me!

I spend most of the morning enjoying my presents,
Playing with this and that, as my cousins run about.
They all go outside and make snow angels, snowmen, and have snow ball fights!
Just like all children love to do on Christmas Day.

I made a comment to my grandma about how beautiful the snow is,
How the sunlight reflecting off of the snow creates the most beautiful colors!
There are many different shades of red, blue, yellow, green, and orange.
I know because I have it all memorized.

Grandma finally calls us all in to eat,
As we are all sitting down at the table as one big happy family,
I can feel the love and happiness filling the room.
I know grandma put a lot of love into each and every dish!

I think to myself this is what Christmas all about, it's not toys and presents,
It's about life, love and giving without expecting anything in return!
This is the most joyous time of year and I'm just happy to be alive.
This is how Christmas looks in my mind's eye!

Author notes

I wrote this for a contest that a dear friend of mine is hosting! It's a great contest idea. I just hope that this is what you was looking for in the contest. It's been in the making for a few days now... I just hope that I did a good job of finally getting my thoughts and ideas out and onto paper. I know it's probably not the best but I did my best and tried my hardest. Hope you all like it. I just thought I would try to put a twist on it and write one from the perspective of what I thought a blind person may see, think, and feel. Please don't be too harsh people but let me know what you think.

this was great! Awsome! Definetly one of the best I've read the whole contest! Thanks for entering my contest. Sorry it's taking me so long to judge, but as you may be able to imagine, it takes a while to read so many poems and pick out the very best. Merry belated christmas!

      Thanks Elvenfairy

Thanks Elvenfairy for taking the time to read, comment and applaud my poem. I'm glad that you liked it. It was originally written for a contest a friend of mine here on AP hosted, and I decided to add a little twist to it and try to write it from the perspective of a visually impaired person. Thanks again for reading it, and it isn't a problem at all that it took a while to comment. Good luck with the contest and on judging the many entries! *hugs*

You have gone one step beyond with this. The change of perspective makes for a very touching description of the festive season as, one hopes, a visually impaired person might experience it.
    Good write.

Hi CountryCousin. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on this. I see. I personally don't know anyone who is blind. WHile working on this I only went by what I thought it may be like for them. That's good that they have a place like that in the community. Aww thanks. You can share it with them if you would like. I don't mind. Thanks. It makes me happy to know that someone thinks I did a good job on it. I wasn't too sure how it would turn out and what others would think about it. Well thanks again for stopping by and leaving a comment. Take care.

Hi sis. Thanks for taking the time to read, comment and applaud this. I'm glad to know that I nailed it! After I finally got it finished last night, I could only hope that it turned out half as good as I had planned for it to. I had so many good ideas and thoughts for this in my head while working on it. Unfortunately I had way way too many distractions while trying to work on it. I'm sure it could have been better but I'm still proud of myself. So how did I do in the impressing department?! LOL. Maybe I have a slight chance of winning lol. I don't know anyone who is blind... I was just going by how I thought it would be for them. You are more than welcome to share this with them. I don't mind at all sis. LOL. Well I will try to keep writing like this. Anyways. Thanks again for stopping by and reading it. Take care love ya sis. Pencils up!

Hi James. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on this poem. I'm glad that you like it. I thought it would be neat to try to write what I thought would be from the perspective of a blind person. Now how good of a job I done I don't know! LOL. From the comments I've gotten so far I did a good job without offending anyone. Which is good. I was sooo anxious to finally get a response lol so I would know good or bad of a job I did on this one. I did add a touch of my own personality to it as well though. Anyways. Aww thanks. I wish that for you as well. Thanks again for the applaud and for leaving such a wonderful comment. I'm glad that you like it. Take care.

    I liked this one.

I have several friends that are blind and in fact we have a Cottage For The Blind in our community. I think they would like this one. This turned out to be a really good contest piece.
