SOCKS (a Christmas Greeting from an impoverished Godmother)

It is very dull, I know,
When the festive candles glow
To unwrap your Christmas box
And discover only - socks!

Other presents please the young:
Travel to some place far-flung,
Whisky to drink 'on the rocks'...
Nothing so mundane as - socks!

Concert tickets would be fine,
Compact discs, a case of wine,
Books to swell a student's stocks...
All were better far than - socks!

Sporting gear, computer games,
Toiletries with famous names,
Even caramels or chocs...
So why do I give you - socks?

Well, I could philosophize,
Saying what socks symbolize:
"Christmas shepherds tend their flocks..."
Sheep give wool and wool gives - socks!

But the truth I do not fear:
I am short of cash this year,
And the bank my spending blocks:
So I can afford just - socks!

But remember when the white
Frosts of January bite,
Though you be as strong as ox,
Still your feet cry out for - socks!

No one, whether young or old,
Studies properly when cold,
You'll unfasten learning's locks
Swifter far in snug new socks!

And next year, if things go well,
And my income starts to swell,
If inflation brings no shocks,
You'll get something more than - socks!

Author notes

I have to say that - having been brought up NOT to spell out the Holy Name in full - I still feel a certain reluctance with having to do so, particularly in a humorous piece.. but since the organizer of the competition seems to want it that way, I have done so.

One never gets the real joy of a gift of socks until you come to put on the fresh soft sweet smelling unwrinkled pair under those old creaky shoes. good write.

and don't care in the least what anybody else thinks about it.

This is clever ... and cute. Well done ... and done well.

What a heart-felt poem this is. I love the idea of the "socks" because it is so true. Not many kids would be thrilled with socks unless he had no socks. lol

This was a wonderful Christmas poem. Filled with the light hearted humor that makes a gret poem better than the rest. There's nothing quite like getting socks for Christmas. It's just part of the holiday spirit, you know, like candy canes, only warmer. Good luck in the contest. Cathy

I hate it when I get clothes for christmas. Every year my aunts and Grandparents give me clothes! While the chothes are nice, it is such a boring gift! But that is how my extended family is. They don't think of gifts that will bring pleasure, they just think of what would be most practical. I made the mistake of asking my Grandma what I should get my boyfriend, and she suggested a wallet! I am NOT giving my boyfriend a wallet for christmas! Well, the wallet suggestion was better than my Grandpa's suggestion of cologne. You buy cologne for your Grandfather, not your boyfriend! Honestly, I am beginning to wonder if I am the only person in my family who has any sence of decent gift giving.

So yeah, I liked your poem. Definetly brought back a LOT of memories for me!

my mother always tried to buy each of her relatives a little something for christmas...there were over thirty grandchildren and then great grand kids, she lived on a very small retirement, so the children got a pair of socks from granny, each pair wrapped as nice as she could in recycled paper from the year before. this poem brought tears to my eyes, thinking how much she wanted to give something. this season brings gifts inmany ways, your poem has given me the gift of a sweet woman who had so little but gave so much...my mother. god bless you, you will never know how this poem touched me.

A wonderful read. I gave my ex socks as one of her gifts one year. She did not appreciate until the steel toed boots she wore become so much more comfortable.

For me socks were the product of my mom's hard work and they were always appreciated.
