It's not known for its big cities
But there's a story deep down
In North Carolina, you hear all
the history written in each town
The beaches and the mountains
Are like another family to me
It's the state I grew up in
It's the only place I want to be
I’d rather eat my momma’s food
Than at a five star hotel
The publicity can be good sometimes
And other times, it’s hell
From L.A. to New York
And the places in between
There’s only one place out there
That feels like home to me
Chorus:
I miss drinking the sweet tea
on those musky summer nights
As I watched the moon and fireflies
light up the starless skies
There’s only one place I was born
and wish to live in ‘til I die
No matter where I go from here on out,
I’m a North Carolina girl inside
My blood runs red, white, and blue
As I cheer the home crowd during each game
And no matter how far I might travel,
no one back home forgets my name
I've still got a blue sky above my head
I've got green grass blades under my feet
Yet deep down, I know there's one place
That will ever be home to me
(Chorus)
You can give me all the red carpets
And I will take them as they come
But my heart stays in a single place
My soul is rooted in a single state
Which, to me, is second to none
(Chorus)
I'm just a North Carolina girl inside
And I'll be a North Carolina girl until I die

Author notes
I'm actually writing out of a female point-of-view. So it's my feminine side talking, ha ha. It's been eons since I wrote something new and posted it here. I blame the country music stations.

Wonderful Carter! I have missed reading your comments on my poems and I haven't stopped by your page either in a long time. How wonderful to connect once again with your poems
This is beautifully done. Makes me want to sing. Wonderful way to have expressed your feminine side
I love the imagery in this song especially fireflies. You know, it's strange - just a day back I was thinking that the mountains of Oman are like a family to me and so also the beaches, especially the Corniche, the sea. I will miss it when I pack my suitcase and go back to India. Sigh! And see, I read it today from your pen. How well we humans connect to our environment and form a bond in the subconscious mind with it. You have my applause for sharing such lovely lyrics that just took my breath away

You know, when talking about the Duke-North Carolina game earlier, I thought of you Carter and wondered if I had overlooked your latest work for some reason. So I checked out your author page, and saw this which in light of the game immediately caught my attention. LOL. I see though, while I overlooked this in December, it is not my imagination that you haven't posted in a while. I hope that changes.
Regardless, I never previously saw this excellent lyrical composition. Like you, I have some North Carolina connections of my own -- though mine are based exclusively on my having gone to college there. Nonetheless, there will always be a little NC in me, much like described in this marvelous song. The first time I recall actually ever seeing fireflies was in fact the first night I spent in Durham in the summer of 1982. I recall being fascinated by them -- I know others take them for granted, but they do not exist in my native Colorado, so they capture a particular meaning to me, much as they are mentioned in your poem. Interesting enough, North Carolina was the first place I also saw a Cardinal. While I saw a few of them there, I do not recall seeing any since the day I graduated. Maybe I have in my other travels, but the images they imprinted remain vivid to this day. It's been almost 25 years since I was a freshman --- but my memories of where I was when I for the first time saw both those fireflies and that cardinal are vivid. Your song lyrics brought that memory back, and I thank you for it. -
You did a very good job letting your feminine side out
This lyric made me think of Yem, a Maine guy, he seems to have the same feeling about Maine as the girl from North Carolina.
The pace and the rhythm are good here Carter.
I enjoyed the read!
