My Place

My Mum and I,
we share a secret hide-away.
Counting backwards from 10, 9, 8, 7, 6,...
and we're at the same beach
a soft wind
pushes the hair out of our faces
and sea spray
washes the makeup from our cheeks

The nurturing afternoon sun
Glances off a salty rock face;
Smooth with age,
Bold and whole,
A tested barrier protecting us
from the concrete world
And the scary people
we secretly mean to hide from

The sun's rays
create a day time star scape on the sand.
looking for the brightest star,
we find a conch shell lying on its side
Abandoned by its former owner.
Mum picks it up to listen,
Pressing its silk surface to her ear,
but I am content to examine only with my eyes.

Feeling its curves in my imagination,
I probe to its pink, spiraling core
Addressing a safe place.
Together, mum and I,
we sit in serene contemplation,
Embellishing ourselves on the beach
This place, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
all in my mind.

Author notes

This is a very special poem to me, as I wrote it for my mum's 40th birthday.  We're very close and we really do escape to beaches in Hawaii or other tropical locations when we're feeling threatened or blue.  The piece that you'll be reading is a revision from the original seeing as I wrote it almost 10 years ago, so enjoy!

    Everything fits.

I had a minister who asked us to describe the place we go to have peace and to meditate. I said the beach, and this is a beautiful piece as well as the graphic. Everything fits here.

Wonderful work! I like your easy going style. The words just seem to flow like liquid. You are a wonderful writer. Please keep the ink flowing. Love and hugs...
