About the world’s pain.
I’m happy recording the verbal vomit,
That pukes out from my brain.
Humans do not interest me,
Nor does their depravity.
A rose by any other name,
Is still a rose to me.
The Arctic tundra is not,
A moonlight serenade.
It’s just a bunch of snowmen,
Waiting to be made.
So when I write about pixies,
And cows of neon pink,
Please remember my dear old friends,
I’m not half as deep as you think.
Author notes
*This title is not my own. I took it from the immortal lines of Ben Elton and Richard Curtis' Blackadder (the fourth one to be exact). I could explain it further, but those who have seen the show will know which bit I'm talking about
P.S. It was brought to my attention that this title came from Gerald Durrell...so it's a third hand title if you will haha
Written December 1st, 2005
I wrote this poem as a sincere plea to those who think I'm clever. I was also partially inspired by my English classes in that we always had to find meaning where I really don't think any existed. So that's how my poem relates to poetry

This is a refreshingly humorous consideration of poetic themes. Realism addresses romanticism, pathos and fantasy not as things to be avoided but simply understood for what they are. There is no cynical scowling here, but a wink at all of us, saying to us "don't B.S. a B.S.er."

Promise...sing
I think you will find that "My Family and Other Animals" is not a title coined by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis' Blackadder but - if not earlier - by the writer Gerald Durrell
'The Arctic tundra is not,
A moonlight serenade.
It’s just a bunch of snowmen,
Waiting to be made.' ... all is to, through and from all

Humans also belong to the animal kingdom, my friend! A good poem, now let us see if it can find a place among the first three. Thanks for entering.

This was quite entertaining. I don't usually read humorous pieces, but this one has an underlying seriousness to it. A perfect mixture of both. I enjoyed it very much.
"So when I write about pixies,
And cows of neon pink,
Please remember my dear old friends,
I’m not half as deep as you think."
That's a great stanza, and a perfect ending. This poem has a disillusioned quality to it... a mood, if you will. I don't know. Maybe I'm just reading too deeply into it. Yet, that's what I do.
Excellent poem. Thanks for sharing it.
