Wetherton’s Characteristics
The Old West fascinated Louis L’Amour, which inspired him to write many short stories. “Trap of Gold” tells a tale about Wetherton, a middle aged man hunting for gold. The protagonist develops into a round, dynamic character as the story progresses.
Upon meeting Wetherton, the reader can easily tell he is a thinking man. The author stresses greatly throughout the rising action of the plot that Wetherton is very thoughtful about his actions.
Although it is evident that Wetherton’s brain guides him threw life, he still has an inevitable need for money. This necessity of life drives him to mine.
Despite the fact that his quest for gold dominates better judgment, love defeats Wetherton’s greed. The emotional bond that Wetherton and his family share becomes the most important characteristic portrayed in “Trap of Gold”.
“Trap of Gold” paints a magnificent picture of Wetherton’s life in the Old West. The artist, Louis L’Amour, portrays how even the most intelligent and logical man can become senseless with lust for gold, although, in this case, Wetherton's feelings for his family prove to be stronger.
