In a place that knows only death
and cold, something is born;
rising through its icy prison,
from frozen shackles its roots are torn.
It raises its head to the sky,
though only a few inches tall;
sprouting leaves from its freezing branches,
so strong, refusing to fall
against the chill of the wind, and weight
of ice as snow falls all around,
getting taller as each day passes;
nothing can make it bow down.
So over the years it will grow,
until its branches reach toward the sky;
and everyone will see the miracle of nature,
living amongst the icy death it defied.
