it's heartache after heartache in the god-forsaken town
we're all swimming in our own embarrassment
each smile feels like a mistake and each word a disappointment
we're each so scared of what the other thinks
and you said, this just wasn't enough
oh no, it wasn't enough to keep you around anymore
you sing in your solemn clashing voice
that peaks when it's not suppose to and you drop it uncontrollably
it's like the story of my life
and time and time again you sing the same old sullen song
but the notes are ever changing thanks to the fault
and you sing
this town just ain't enough to keep me in one place
this place ain't clean enough to let an old bird sing
the ground i walk on is a trashed and dirty floor
if you can't see that then it's not a question of 'what if' but 'what for'
i told you once of your significance in my own life
you replied with a simple answer, a riddle of some sort
i never understood until right now
you said, follow me and i'll treat you like you want, but if you stray from me you'll never find what you need, my side is a guide that only you can follow
and this a path much too difficult for me
but at least i can say i tried
you still sing
this town just ain't enough to keep me in one place
this place ain't clean enough to let an old bird sing
the ground i walk on is a trashed and dirty floor
if you can't see that then it's not a question of 'what if' but 'what for'
