my eyes stray upward
and I notice the vertical silhouettes
outlining faces
with unblinking eyes
through the grated windows above
not that it matters...
I’m kneeling
in deep thought and reverence
with a somber, solemn feeling
a million mental miles away
not that I care...
I'm at a memorial
commemorating those who are memorialized
though I didn't know them...
where I stay so long that the classical Greek columns
seem to lean inward and bleed their marble brightness
onto the unblinking curious faces
and all is right with the world
at least for this moment...
then I hear a story
where there is no cheer
and I turn
now there's something that matters
