I knew a young girl last year,
as I came across her way...
Grace knew what dying felt like,
'cause she felt it every day.
Stronger than I'll ever be,
Grace knew a strength inside
that kept her 'til her dying day,
and acted as her guide...
Half my age, yet twice the person I'll ever be...
Lord, it was an angel
who passed along by me.
Grace said good-bye at sunset
on the 52nd day...
I waved goodbye, but did God cry
as we wished her well along her way?
But why...why, Lord, do your angels have to die?
Wings of gold, so young yet old,
as they soar on through the sky.
Half my age, yet twice the person I'll ever be...
God, Grace, she was an angel,
and she passed along by me.
Grace so young, Grace so sweet,
she fought and fought against defeat
just to lose against a blow
unfair to all who watched her go.
Grace met God, God was cruel,
to take an angel, not a fool...
and God, I just can't forgive--
you took a child who deserved to live.
Half my age, and twice as wise,
a stronger angel than I realize,
who passed along at sunset
on the 52nd day...
Who'd you meet along your way, Grace,
what wonders did you see?
You died along beside me...
Half my age...but more than I could ever be.
as I came across her way...
Grace knew what dying felt like,
'cause she felt it every day.
Stronger than I'll ever be,
Grace knew a strength inside
that kept her 'til her dying day,
and acted as her guide...
Half my age, yet twice the person I'll ever be...
Lord, it was an angel
who passed along by me.
Grace said good-bye at sunset
on the 52nd day...
I waved goodbye, but did God cry
as we wished her well along her way?
But why...why, Lord, do your angels have to die?
Wings of gold, so young yet old,

Half my age, yet twice the person I'll ever be...
God, Grace, she was an angel,

Grace so young, Grace so sweet,

Half my age...but more than I could ever be.
Author notes
Well, one day I had some motivation. Then I got a tune in my head and started writing out words to match it. Next, of course, I lost that motivation, as I do with most songs! So these lyrics were just left in a file...I came across them just now, and I thought they weren't horrible, so here they are. It's about having to watch a little girl die. Cheery, I know.
