I met Rhia almost three years ago. It was February of 2003, I was online late at night, and in a random AOL chatroom. We were all getting along and laughing, but for some reason, Rhia was the one person who was very sad, and she seemed to be chasing after people, trying to be friends with them. She also got easily offended when someone said something she didn't like. I don't know what it was but I decided to instant message her outside of the chatroom, and from then on we were friends. At the time she was 13 and I was 17 but we clicked instantly. She was the one who always made my day. If I was depress, all I had to do was go on to a computer, and Rhia was there, it was great, she was only a click away. She was the first person who I told my darkest secrets to. She never rejected me, and she never criticized me. When my Grandmother died, it was nice to read her e-mails, full of laughter, hope, inspiration, and even sadness. She has gone through so much over the years. I hope that I am as good a friend to her as she is to me. I feel like we are growing up together. When I was about to lose my internet service, we decided to swap addresses, and for months we wrote to each other. Now I live in Connecticut, and she lives in California, its a long ways. We still manages to keep in contact. It was always exciting to get a letter from her. She was like the sister I never had, and whenever we wrote or e-mailed, I always felt like she was my journal in a ways. I turned on my internet just to keep in touch with her. Now she is going on 17 and I on 21. I plan on making a trip down to California soon, and maybe we will meet up. Even if I never see her face to face, I thank god, or who ever that we met. She is one of the best friends I have, and she's just as real to me online as my friends offline are, perhaps even closer.
Author notes
I hope I did this right. This is about my online best friend. We've been through hard times together, and good times. She means a lot to me. On this website, she is known as tragic-love, and infact was the person who first told me about this website, a couple of years ago.

Congratulations on bronze!
The fact that it is a short story for friendship makes it interesting indeed. Treasure your friendship and never let it be taken away from you

WOW
I could have sworn I commented on this before!
Well let me get to it!
Thank you for breaking out of the mold and offering up prose rather than poetry.
Your story of friendship is very touching. i for one totally agree that online friends can be just as real and meaningful as those we see face to face. it takes more to commumnicate when all you have is words and to understand one another in that context is very fulfilling.
Thank you for sharing this and good luck.

Yes, a wonderful write about your very special friend. Just what we're looking for
I love how you say talking to her is almost like an online journal-- that familiarity is the mark of a great, close friendship. Thank you for sharing this special relationship with us
