You, Me and Sam

I can’t watch a sitcom so soon after the news.
So much sadness left my heart barren tonight.
Sirens are blaring somewhere in the distance
In this old world, it seems like nothing is right.

Television and movies thrive on this stuff.
I suppose it keeps the big bucks rolling in.
Maybe peace and quiet never last very long
Because so many profit from horror and sin.

So let’s turn off the TV and light a few candles.
Put on some Sam Cooke - an album, not a CD.
I know they sound better, but they have no charm.
I like the lived-in crackles of an old, vinyl LP.

Turn it up loud enough to drown out the madness,
The hubbub of all this progress for its own sake.
Sometimes all the craziness invades me too deeply
And I need some soft music to ease the heartache.

Yeah, that’s better.  Nobody sang it like ol’ Sam did.
The sweet, simple melody makes you feel so fine.
I’ve heard this song so many times, it’s part of me.
It’s like I wrote it for you, like the lyrics are mine.

If I go
A million miles away
I’ll write a letter
Each and every day
'Cause honey, nothin', nothin'

Can ever change this love I have for you

There aren’t many spiritual refuges in this chaotic old city;
The silence always broken by shattering glass and alarms.
I guess I’m just old-fashioned.  “Born too late”, as they say.
I hide in music and poetry, but especially in your arms.

Even Sam fell victim to the night and this city,
Shot down in his prime in some seedy motel.
He had so much left to give when he was taken.
His music makes me feel like I knew him so well.

Those old songs never fail to soothe my soul.
I wish the world could be the one they created.
Though I know their harmony is just an illusion.
Back then, like today, people fought and hated.

Music brushes away the dust of this world
And reinvents it again the way it should be.
My favorite songs are a lot like fairy tales.
They turn their back on reality, just like me.

Music and love seem to serve a similar purpose
For a union of souls is the grandest refuge of all.
In this slow dance, we create our own fairy tale.
I’m the prince and you’re the belle of the ball.

Oh, you're the apple of my eye
You're cherry pie
You're cake and ice cream
You're sugar and spice and everything nice
You're the girl of my dreams

Baby, thank you for the peace you’ve given me.
Thank you for loving me the way that you do.
I wish I could hold you just like this forever.
There’s no greater heaven than here, close to you.

Sam’s singing all the words I don’t tell you enough.
Strong, clear and sweet, and wrapped up in a song.
He’s smiling in heaven, singing just for you and me.
The day’s washed away, and we have all night long.

If you wanted
T
o leave me and roam,
When you got back,

I'd just say welcome home
Cause, honey, nothin',
nothin' can ever change
This love I have for you

Author notes

Sam Cooke is my favorite singer. The lyrics I quote in the poem (in Italics) are from his song Nothing Can Change This Love.

I'm amazed and saddened at how many people have never heard of this man and his music. I wasn't even born when he died, but my family has always seemed to have his music around. I grew up as a fan, and my admiration for Sam Cooke and his music and his contributions to music have all grown with me. Nice tribute. I'm sure I'd like to visit his grave site one day, too. Too bad it's closed to the public

This is an extraordinary tribute. The songs quoted bring back the memory of a basement party my older cousins had in my parents basement when I was about 13 years old. I should not have been at their party but I was a bold kid, and it was my house. LOL I remember them "cootie-crawling" (slow drag dancing) to Sam Cooke with the lights out. I think that may have been the "nasty dancing" back in the day. LOL

Mark, Mark...this is splendid! There are so many lines in this wonderful rhyming poetry that free my spirit! What a sensational classical ballad of the life of a man that could melt the heart. His words ring soft and clear, as do yours.

    I must mention the lines that leaped off the page into my soul;

"I like the lived-in crackles of an old, vinyl LP. "

    Yes, yes... me too.

"For a union of souls is the grandest refuge of all."

I agree so with this line that it makes me shake my head in absolute wonder.

I LOVE THIS POEM! Thank you so much for directing me here. This is my first read of the day and I am soothed and sigh with great admiration of a job well done my friend.

    BRAVO!

    Much Love,
    Renee

I never knew Steve Perry was influenced by Sam Cooke, but now that I think of it, he does sound a lot like him. Rod Stewart was also a big fan. I heard he spent about a year listening to nothing but Sam Cooke when he was developing his own voice.

It's nice to meet a fellow Sam fan! Thanks.

Well, I'll get out the cloth and dust off the vinyl while you set up the turn table. Hope you dance, because there is no way I could ever listen to this man and not want to be in a pair of arms moving to the rythm of his songs. The man sang with his soul. He knew what it was about, he got it! So few really do. His gospel was as close to heaven as you could get.

This is tremendous! Not only is it extremely well written, it's completely heartfelt as well, and tells some of the story of a great singer - and one of my favorites! I've loved Sam Cooke fora million years, and if I'm not mistaken Steve Perry - Journey's former lead singer - loves him too! I like to think you and I are in good company! (I love Journey and Steve Perry ) Great job!!!

Great tribute. I'm also a fan. The innocence and hope always lived loud. The use of music to sooth the savage pinhead is central to my well-being so this well crafted salute rang very true indeed. Thanks for a great read.

I've never heard of Sam Cooke, but sound like he is good. I agree that this world is to full of sin and shame. No one cares about the little things anymore. Everyone's to busy to take time a help others, or just do something good and relaxing. Very Wonderful!

I love the Charlie Brown Christmas CD, too. Vince Guiraldi, right? (Sp?) Not big on Billy and Ella but love Nat. Probably a guy thing since I can't sing along with women as easily. lol

I found out after writing this that Sam Cooke is buried at Forest Lawn Mortuary in Glendale, where I live! I went to visit his grave but they wouldn't tell me where it was because their policy was to keep celebrity graves a secret. I told them it was a pretty dumb policy since celebrities would probably like to have fans talking to them at their graveside. But I got on a site called "gravefinder.com" and located it. It's in a part of the mortuary that is closed to the public but I'll get in. Now it's a mission. haha It will be nice to sit at his grave with my guitar and sing a few of his songs to him. I also learned that he wasn't exactly a saint. He got shot in a hotel office while chasing a prostitute who had stolen his wallet. He was stark naked at the time. But I don't think how a man dies matters as much as how he lived and the happiness he gave to the lives of others.

If you look up Sam, my favorite songs are I'm In A Sad Mood Tonight, That's Heaven To Me, and the one I quoted in the poem, Nothin' Can Change This Love. I think you'd like That's Heaven To Me. Here are the lyrics -

A little flower that blooms in May,
A lovely sunset at the end of a day,
Someone helping a stranger along the way,
    That's heaven to me.

The feeling I have when I hear a touching prayer,
It makes me know the Lord is somewhere.
Even the birds flying around in the air.
    That's heaven to me.

It doesn't have to be a miracle
in order for me to see, I know
    the goodness of my Savior
    is everywhere to me.

Even the children playing in the street
saying a friendly hello to everyone that they meet.
Even the leaves falling out of the trees.
    That's heaven to me.

It doesn't have to be a miracle
in order for me to see, I know
    the goodness of my Savior
    is everywhere to me.

I've never heard of Sam Cookie- I'll have to look him up!

I favor Nat King Cole, Billy Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald, not to mention "Linus and Lucy"- the music from the Charlie Brown cartoons... makes for a nice quiet evening with a cup of cappuccino!

Nothing sets the mood to dance, to have fun, to love, the way good music does! I was listening to a song just now that goes, "turn the radio up for that sweet sound, hold me close, never let me go.... keep this feelin alive, make me lose control!" and this poem does justice to Sam Cooke and all the good ones

I was depressed, but this poem gave me a great idea! I put on my CD player! Already I'm feeling better!

Great tribute! It is said that when you sing to God, you praise Him twice, so that's really a testament to how good music is for the soul!

A truly wonderful write that touches on so many things in day to day life. I love your stuff.- Harper

    David,

That has to be one of the funniest lines I've ever read -

"The other day I sang the openning bars to a "Change is gonna come" and launched into " was borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnn by the river" and realised just how fucking white I was and shut up."

    hahahahaha

I hate to break this to you, but this particular white guy can do one hell of a mean Sam Cooke imitation. In fact, a black friend of mine said, "Man, you can really sing for a white boy." lol

Then again, it's impossible for a white boy to sell a song about slavery or civil rights no matter how well he sings it. Though we may have plenty of compassion, we just don't have the moral authority or the psychic legacy.

Thanks, pal. It's nice to know someone around here appreciates the finer things.

Even taking the first sentance of your poem says everything...I love to listen to music in a candle lit room. Close my eyes and see all the words in the song come before me and warm my heart and soften my soul...Music is the soul of the world writing by people who have lived and loved. Well, guess who Rod's main influence was? I'll give you one guess. haha I read a story that said he listened to nothing but Sam Cooke for about two years once when he was a kid. It's easy to hear the influence. Yes, Lou Rawls is awesome, too.

you know without even knowing Sam Cooke's music, or at least not thinking I know his music, you really compiled a beautiful poem which not only speaks beautifully to the reader with a message, but pays a wonderful tribute to this man and his music. I love how you interlaced some of the lyrics within your poem, made it feel to actually carry a musical undertone throughout and added a certain specialness to your own words.

you can be certain I'll be looking for some Sam Cooke songs next Best Buy trip!!!

Sam Cooke fan? I just love this guy, I was going to say to death but some red neck woman beat me to that. Beat Sam too. His music transcends time.

The other day I sang the openning bars to a "Change is gonna come" and launched into " was borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrnnnn by the river" and realised just how fucking white I was and shut up. But how can you live without never having heard Sam and Lou Rawls sing "Bring it on home"

By the way, wonderful piece, great tribute and for two white guys on each side of the world, nice taste in music.
