Late at night
as I lay
covered solely with lilac light
from the
box
of memories,
I saw the butterflies
of my youth
fly.
Within an old torrid
rose
inside my palm
I found your
kiss.
Late at night
with perfumes of
lilac
from the old
box
of memories.

Nice! Sort of reminds me of Pandora's Box, but sweeter and more....purple.
Thanks!

Thank you Carol. Yes lilac was always in my mother's garden and this smell is much more than a scent. It is a memory on my youth and time what never will be back again. It was a time without money, but full of love.

Oh, Kitty, I really do not have enough words to say how much so nice comments like yours are precious to me. Thank you.

Enchanting!
Beautiful Sonja!
I was drawn by the word lilac as it is my favorite color and flower....and then the word butterfly, another favorite.
Not used in realism, but in metaphoric verse that is simply enchanting!
I interpret your lilac light as the warmth that the feelings fill you with, not a red hot light, as those burn in love in the present tense. But, a more subtle hue of red, a passionate, but more sedate and intoxicating color of purple. And lilac is such a light-at-heart, more faint shade. How nostalgic this shade makes your memories feel.
How softly those butterflies of memories flutter around you as you lose yourself in the smell of the flower and the moments that surrounded you and your sweet kiss!
And then the lilac smell...ahh, yes...more imagery and metaphor to feast my hungry and poetic mind upon!
Not only is the lilac the most beautiful smelling flower in the world(to me anyway), but it relays the metaphoric "heady" feel that those memories brought you. I too (as well as my mother passed) get high off the smell of those.
But nothing gets our thoughts lost and our emotions as high as those sweet memories gone by of youth and love long gone.
I got lost here...and you delicately lifted me away momentarily as does the scent of my favorite flower. You have inspired me...one day soon I shall write a piece about it.
How soft, sweet, and softly packed into simple, yet elegant words!
Good luck...but win or not, your piece is a winner to me. If I ever put a coffee-table scrapbook together of my favorite poetry to reread when I feel the mood, this will be one I include!
Thank you for touching me this morning and for such wonderful, sweet words.
Peace and love to you,
~Kitty {{{{

Exquisite!
Oh Sonja, this is such a sweet poem, I interpret the lilac light as being the mature years, here you are, going down memory lane by opening up your box of beautiful past memories, reliving each wonderful, sweet experience all over again. I can see you in my mind's eye, bringing the old rose to your face and smelling the scent of it still, remembering the very moment you first held it in your hand and the occassion of the time. I love poems that are written of times past, it gives us the opportunity to really excell with our writing because we remember past experiences so well.
Wonderfully Written

Thank you for your kind comment and your thoughts.
Sometimes we have a need to keep some memories even then when we do need them. Some memories are engraved in our past and it is very hard to make a change. Also, some memories are simply the part of my life and I can't pretend that it doesn't happened.
