Beyond Words

Conversations carry
from several tables,
One was odd.

A gregarious list
of stipulations,
thesis comities,
research possibilities,
This couple sorted
only a few

He listened
She spoke,
as if to teach
a lecture hall

At first
her tone was
demanding
of attention,
Though nothing
quite striking

Though she assaulted
our ears
The tenor was
quite bland

Her bent was
inclusive,
obtrusive,
Trying withal
to preach

Her voice throttled
intellectual aggression,
It worked well as
an appetite
suppressant

Tolerance to get tail,
Feign listen to someone
profligately
pontificate
and rail

From an apartment window
she leaned out
declaring the view

Level spine from behind,
He travels where words
dare not go

Wailing observations,
Socratic secretions-
speaking in tongues

Speech is ceased because
the most profound thought
is beyond words-
Explosive contraction

Symbiotic sensation-
primal pulse.

Author notes

This poem slams pedantic one sided academic conversations. The ones where one of the two has numb ears and wishes to leave but knows it doesn't matter. The talker will continue speaking as if from wrote, with a blank expression, and only ask rhetorical questions

I witnessed this from men and this time it was a woman who lowered herself. Got creative and surreal by including the one thing that might shut this person's mouth....

I know a few people like you've mentioned but the majority are women. I generally look at it as a case of verbal diarrhea that spews forth in all diretions hoping to find the right target that will listen with interest only to cause the person to go on and on and on. I liked your use of words for this poem. It really carried the poem along with a teriffic use of images. Thank you for entering my contest and best wishes to you. Avril
