I wish I had a magic eraser
To take your sadness away.
I'd use it to erase forever
All the pain of yesterday.
I'd wipe the slate clean, pound the eraser
And collect all the dust inside an old sack.
Then I'd take it away to the end of the earth
And bury it so deep, it could never come back.
Then I'd return again to the drawing board
And with a hand inspired by my love for you,
I'd draw a colorful, vibrant, happy new world
That you and I could just walk right in to.
A world where death holds no dominion
A world with no more sad goodbyes,
A world where everyone lives forever,
So I'd never again see tears in your eyes.
I love you, Claudia.
Author notes
My girlfriend Claudia is a nurse in a pediatric ward. A sick child died yesterday and she was/is very upset about it. She's everything a nurse should be. In fact, I worry that her job will break her heart constantly, because her heart is too big and she can't separate her work from her life. I write about life and death, God and religion, etc., all the time, but she is knee deep in life and death every day, always giving and loving with her whole heart, and she remains faithful in a loving God. My faith wains constantly, though I don't see half the suffering she does. She's the one who should be a poet. Her goodness and generosity of spirit puts me to shame.

Your dedication to Claudia seemed to swipe away the memory of your poem. I'll have to read it again...
Yes, what lovely heartfelt compassion you show in this write. To love someone so much that you would do what it takes to clear their pain so that they can find peace. Such a giving love you describe without a hint of wanting in return. An unconditional love, the best kind there is. Just beautiful Mark...alby

Hi Sharon,
Of course you can use it. Always feel free to use any of my poems for any purpose. I'm not one of those people who copyright everything and keep it to myself. If someone out there steals a poem of mine and manages to get rich with it somehow, God bless them. I sure haven't been able to make any serious money with poetry. haha
I hope this helps Damian's family feel a little better.
Thanks,
Mark -
This is beautiful, you have said things that I have been thinking in this poem. May I use this one in that booklet for Damian's family? If you don't want me to I won't just a question. This shows a lot of compassion....i'm rather scatterbrained right now so I"m gonna go.

Beautiful
This is another reason why I would never be a nurse, not only because of the needles, but because I could never care and lose a person day after day. Claudia has a strong heart and I truly believe that her strong faith in God gets her through such trials as this. I'm sorry that this happened to her, I hope she is doing better in coping with losing such a young soul. My her selfless spirit find peace.
This is my favorite types of poems from you Uncle Mark, your selfless poetry to the people you love. Your golden heart really shines when you write of your love. You should write more about her
Love you,
Your Niece,
Sara

Thnak God I didnt miss the chance to read this soul feeding write. Thank you for writing it Mark. It is very painful to see a child die, I know, have been there more than twice, even though I am not a medic. I can understand Claudia's life, it's not about being on the job, it's the heart, we are humnas you know. This write and the comments in your Authors box reminded me of a very beautiful Kevin Costner's movie called " Dragonfly" If you have watched it, you will know what I am talking about, if not do watch it.
Hope all is well with you, my best wishes to Claudia.
Love and light,
Lencio -

This is a gorgoeus(sp) write. Being a nurse brings a lot of heart ache, is what I have foundto be true with the ones I know. I think it helps them to be a better nurse, when they have such a caring heart. I wish more doctors werelike that as well.. Athena

Wow... I'm not asking permission this time- I'm adding her to my prayer list.
And, I don't know if she likes poetry (-although I assume she might since she's dating a writer!-), but here's a poem I'd like you to share with her. It's one my friend Rita gave me when I was hurting about something:

from the heart
This is beautiful Mark. The fact that you have a deep feeling of wanting, needing to take away her saddness is not a surprise to me my friend. This is a wonderfully crafted poem. It not only shows that you have a big heart, but Claudia does as well.
Simply heartfelt. -
i think deep down inside, all of us wish we had our own magic eraser. i loved this. it sent a strong message. keep up the good work.
-
I wish your wish could come true, Mark. We want those we love to be happy all the time...but in this world of sorrow and pain, the best we can do is to let our loved ones know we care. You have done that very nicely with this poem.

I work in a similar field to your girlfriend and I know her struggles.
The first time thru your poem I saw beauty and desire to help ease the burdens of the one you love. Not an empty desire to carry the burdens of the other, but a desire to help wipe those burdens away.
After reading your author note I went back and reread from that perspective, thinking what it would be like to have such words written for me when I have just lost one of the children I work with and it had even a deeper and more wonderful meaning.
I will say this. Those with an open and giving heart are subject to deeper grief, but they are also open to a deeper truer love. I know this, the death of a child brings grief, but it can also bring great joy knowing that child is now resting in God's hands and will never have to suffer the trials and grief of this world. I am guessing Claudia may have this same perspective. So the grief comes, but beneath it lies this joy and comfort.
Thank you for sharing this intimate message with us.

speechless is what I am...how lucky is she to have such a man of depth and never-ending love. In a world that can be so cold and damning it is spiritually lifting to know there are people in this world who are so giving and loving as she is. It brings me hope...excellent, exquisite piece as always.

awww this is so sweet. I wish it realy could be done but then again in some ways just being with the one u truly love can eares all the pain.. Anyway great work I love it!!

Beautiful!
"A world where everyone lives forever,
A world with no more sad goodbyes,
A world where death holds no dominion
So I'd never again see tears in your eyes."
It may be the oldest Dream/Wish in the world but still worth holding on to.
Girlfriend! Boy, you better grab that one and make it permanent.
It is refreshing to see someone still writing in a way that I perceive as "Real" poetry!
Keep on Penning! -
Thank you for your sweet heart and caring soul. If your girlfriend didn`t love her job, her heart would not hurt so. She must be a great nurse and I`m sure she touches as many hearts that touch hers. Thank God for nurses! & Doctors! If their was such thing as a eraser, I would buy everyone one for xmas. We could all use a bit of dust removel from time to time. The two of you have a long life together because you can see into each others hearts and soul and feel what the other is feeling. Thanks for sharing xo
-
It's so full of love and the words make it evident that it's straight from the heart. I'm sure Claudia would've adored it. The words truly shpow how much you love her. It was really amazing the way you used a little thing like 'eraser' to express how you feel.
Great job.

Spoken with a heart full of love and admiration. Hugs to Claudia and much empathy for the losses she incurs through her profession. We all are lucky to have her and those other professional who spend their days helping the rest of us.

She's very lucky to have someone like you who cares so much about how she is feeling inside. Such a touching poem.
-
what a huge, generous heart you have! one of the things a woman longs for from the man she loves is a love letter or a poem just for her
your lady does the job God wants her to and he sent you to care for her. two strong people united can reach that perfect world at times.
wonderful poem and i hope it cheered her
-
Very, very nice. Keep up the amazing writing.

this was such a beautiful peace. i am actually in tears right now. your extra comments just topped this magnificent piece off. you are a truly skilled writer. this piece is amasing, and i hope that your friend never loses her faith. she seems like the kind of person everyone want taking care of them, yet you, have the joy of being taken care of everyday just by her smile and laughter. never let her forget the impact she has on your life. i only wish that i eventually gaina friend like yours. congrats on a lovely piece, you should show it to her. i'm sure she'd love it.
