Real Time Shorn

On this Saturday morning I saw clearly for the first time:
There was no hope for our romance; he would never be mine.

Time to think, time to dream, time to suffer,
“Time will tell,” “time heals all wounds,” -- not in jail.
Bars do not allow time to be a healing buffer
Against the severe pain of loneliness I now suffer.

My lover was only on paper; but words can be wonderful stimulation.
My ad in the GLOBE Lonely Hearts section, sent throughout the nation,
Snagged my man; he always knew of my incarceration.
Yet wrote to me with huge anticipation and deep satisfying consummation!

We made love as if at home through the letters he formed.
Letters made up lines of words, made up, yes, -- but from his soul born.
All we did, it was so great, yet I know was of real time shorn,
I now realize to my surprise on this saddest Saturday morn.

On this Saturday morning I saw clearly for the first time:
There was no hope for our romance; he would never be mine.

I have six years to go, -- I finally told him on the phone.
[I get to use a prison phone only on Saturday morn.]
I had been telling him I’d be out soon, nothing to postpone.
Now it’s over, no more great love to share, I turn to stone.

He is at the fork in the road I saw from my first lie.
I dial him up again as I cry, as I die away.
He does not answer me; he has got nothing to say.
My lies have thrown away my paper love today.

Martha was in prison for killing her wife beating husband.
She has never once in her life had love of the right kind.
Now she sinks behind those bars in a wretched state of mind.
Martha Moss kills again, this time herself, this in real time.

On this Saturday morning she saw clearly for the last time:
There never had been hope for her for real romance in time.

I am impressed with this story-poem... "Real Time Shorn" diffuses art. Its imagery and lexis; rhythm and subjects dealt... Everythig is part of a poetic banquet. A true feast of aestheic and creativity.

I have enjoyed the reading of "Real Time Shorn".

Much gratitude to the author of "Real Time Shorn" for sharing this glorious composition.

    In respect and admiration,

    WoW!

My lies have thrown away my paper love today. That line makes the whole poem. The pitiful story told in this poem makes my heart wrench. How sad, and the lies she told were only to keep her love alive. This poem is filled with sadness, lies, and love. How odd to find all three together and blended so well. KUDOS!

A very sad story. WEll written and cleverly creative.

  • Very sad tale. I love this insightful narrative which allows me to travel deep down the paths of emotion. The idea is very original, and seems very real, like something that could really happen, which makes the poem even more captivating. This sense of realism allows me to understand the situation well and feel empathy, but I wish that the narrative had more figurative language in it, more vivid and conceptual imagery, but perhaps that is just a bias of mine, a personal preference and nothing more. Compelling story.

This was so... different. Yet, really good. I kinda think this revolved more around the idea that we're different people when hiding behind a pen or a phone rather than face to face. Thanks for entering!
