My eyes glanced at the paper
I slowly closed the door
my eyes saw the front page
the paper dropped to the floor
I saw the name of a young man
a young man that I knew
I remember him in high school
his name was Bobby too
He died last week in combat
in a country far away
he is coming home tomorrow
to have his final day
Bobby was only twenty
he served his country well
it will be a closed casket
he must have gone through hell
He was a fine brave soldier
let's honor him today
hang the flags, bow your heads
Bobby's on his way
He's on his final journey
it won't be very long
he'll know he has arrived
he'll hear an angel's song
Say a prayer for our soldiers
think of them each day
many more will lose their lives
in a land so far away
Author notes
God Bless our troops and their families for all they sacrifice.
I remember a young medic who was killed in combat in Vietnam. He was my next door neighbor and a childhood friend

Sandygram, your poetry touches the hearts of so many on here, I wonder do you realise just how many of us it does ... This poem is no exception, I felt my heart pinpricked - expecting at first a telegraphed letter poem, and then discovering that you've opening up yet more avenues ....
You truly have a gift... -
Nice poem...Most often military peoles get neglected...and your love for them is clearly shown by this poem.....Great Cheers let's all pray for them!
