There's naught that cures a day's unequaled strife,
By tragedies, or worse- the commonplace,
There's naught that lifts the quality of life
Like spying out an old, familiar face;
A face that time has changed in shape and hue,
Yet holds a knowing glint within the eye,
A face that only means so much to you
And not to all the ones that pass it by.
This countenance shines through the burden's rain
And sends a rainbow straight into your heart,
Or breaks the dam that floods with pressure's pain,
Releasing them to let the healing start.
What better way to picnic or to mend
Than with this face- an old, familiar friend.
Author notes
Well, here's the long, drawn-out version of why I wrote this.
Right now, my social life is near nonexistence- my own fault, really. Henceforth, I've been trying to set up some quality time with friends.
I was able to speak with one of them online tonight. I mentioned to her that I missed her (and the others)... that it was like the difference between air conditioning and good, old outdoor fresh air! (I LOVE fresh air.)
Well, this picture makes me think of "freshness", too... Like, when you first jump into a pool of water, how refreshing it feels- how it stimulates your senses...
And as I was thinking on all of those things together, I was also thinking about the wonderful peace that comes over you when you know your among people who love you for who you are. It's a very releasing feeling at times for me. It's a means of washing out your spiritual system, I believe!
Praise God that, in His infinite wisdom, He created friends.
And so, this poem was an attempt at expressing all of that.
Thanks for the picture!

I had a comment in October on this poem. I repeat the comment. The last line starts with an anapest. And while Shakespeare did this in his sonnets ????

Beautiful
This is beautiful and extremely well-written! You are amazing.
Such a poet.

Sweet! I am quickly reminde of all my friends that have sweetened my life, to the glory of God. Thank the Lord for those friends, and who have helped in my walk with Him.
Awesome write. I like the antiquated style of this. This was really moving. -
Friends no greater gift on this earth than good firends I have been blessed with many most of whom would give up thier lives for me (some have) as I would for them (haven't had to yet) This is a wonderfully relaxing piece of work you have written

oops...thank you for entering.

This is beautiful...and the meaning behind it was great....even before I read your comment. Lovely

nice poem with a good theme
This poem is true to form with the iambic pentameter verses, the tri ple quatrain, and the couplet acting as a volta at the end. Theme is sentimental, but honest. I liked this work very much. -
I don't think friends grow old in the memory we hold so close to us. You worded this very well about wonderful friends, just have that familiar face in an unfamiliar turf is such a wonderful reward.
-
Friends are precious aren't they, especially old ones, ones that we have had for a long time...how valuable they are to us..more precious than gems...arh to have friends..I just sit here and ponder of all the good friends I have..they make me smile and cry in gratitude...your poem is beautiful and brings so many warm memories home to me.

I found this kinda hard to read, but after reading it a couple of times, I got it(finally) I really liked this one alot and the completeness of the poem

This is really excellent. It reminded me of a poet named Patience Strong a little bit. (A Christian poet, you'll be glad to know.
) I don't say this often but I think this poem has very professional quality in every way - word use, grammar, presentation, and theme. And so true. There's nothing like an old friend.
Great work. A bookmarker for sure.

Good
Such a meaningful write, we must all treasure and cherish old friendships and never let them fade away.

very well written. impressive ten syllable count for every single line! and I agree, nothing like familiarity to set a person at ease.

I can totally see what you mean by reading this poem. Its peaceful, and makes me want to go and call all my old friends myself. Good write.
