but his thoughts are far away
thinking about his wife and children
takes the reality of war away
He is there to serve his country
this fine soldier will sacrifice
he will lay his life down for you
without even thinking twice
Let us pray to bring them all home
bring them home safe, sound and soon
God watch over this fine young man
as he sits under the desert moon
There is no joy in war or dying
the pain and sorrow lasts for years
too many men, women and children
will be shedding millions of tears
So bring our fine troops home soon
let them all come home safe and sound
the silence of the night is shattered
by the explosion of a mortar round
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS

I applaud this poem, and congratulate you on it, but I think this is a case where "less is more." May I suggest you try it without the second and forth stanzas. I think the shorter version is more powerful.

There's a new movie out now; Jarhead .. it depicts the war very well.
Everyone but Bush wants our troops to come home. Anyway Jarhead shows the willingness of some of the troops to be there. Good job. -
God bless our troops and what they have done for us. great write

He is there to serve his country
this fine soldier will sacrifice
he will lay his life down for you

Thats a very true stanza, and a heart breaking one, sometimes they dont come out on top, and they did it for us, there families, and no one ever said they had to, it was a choice, awesome!

This is beautifully written, Thanks so much for sharing your words with all of us here on allpoetry, you have an amazing talent. ..

I love it when you write poems like this - they help me cope with the fact that as soon as school's over I'm losing three of my best friends, one of which I have strong feelings for, to the war in Iraq. These poems inspire me and help me keep my faith. Thank you
-
WoW! I almost cried. This poem is so sincere and wonderful. You gotta give your love to the boys in camo. Thanks for sharing this great write with all of us!
-
Sincerity Par Example
My mind almost erased "And" because the message is urgent. This works as a prayer and a dedication. Your words are so powerful and real that I'm willing to bet God was watching you write it. I'm just a believer who thinks your prayer will soon be answered.
Hope is my other elixir

wow Sandy, yet another beautiful poem you've written for our troops.
May god protect them and bring them home soon.
-
wowww....i nearly stopped reading this smack dab in the middle of your piece becuase i was getting too emotional. thank goodness though, i did finish through!! Great job on this poem! No matter how many times I read about war and soldiers sacrificing, i get ssooo choked up....problably since it is SUCH an immense topic, with such heartache, victory and all that. Great job capturing that topic!!
-
awwww thats so sweet and everyone can relate to that,
i loved it,
even if they have no family in that situation,
b'coz we are all human and feel for others,
i think its so sweet and nice that you wrote this
and shared it with all of us....................
Keep up the good and beautiful work

Very well written, with deep emotions and honesty throughout the lines. How long will it take, how many deaths will there be, before this is all over?
-
Impecable
Impecable! you know that is just what these soldiers are doing and thinking. I am greatly appreciative for all that they have done. Having lost a dear friend in this war I can truly say thanks for the prayers and yes he went home safe and sound but only in the spirit. -
This is a beautiful poem I love it. And I agree, the soldiers need to come home, there is no reason for them to stay. Its so pointless. Anyways, me rambling. Great poem, i enjoyed it alot. Keep writing, you've got the talent.
-
very beautiful poem Sandy, and the closing stanza was simply eloquent. a very nice tribute and a very good poem!

To live in a world of peace would be the fulfillment of a national dream, unfortunately, after each conflict another always arises. Your attempt to capture the lonliness of a soldier in a sandy desert is admirable.
-
This is a beautiful piece of poetry written to honor our dedicated troops. It could use a bit of polish to make it read better, but the heart of it is very clear and sincerely written. What wonderful men we have who will lay their lives down to protect our freedom!
-
This is such A GREAT PIECE. This is such a great dedication to all of our soldiers in this world. May they hold our prayers in their hearts. This is probably the best "soldier' poem I have read. Wonderful job.
-
hi Sis, Wonderful poem! We should be very proud of our troops...but helping people who have spent generations killing each other and anyone who tries to bring peace are not worth the sacrifice of our finest young men and women. We removed the madman...now it's up to Iraqis to decide if they want to fight for democracy or just bring back the madman. Our troops have done enough while the rest of the world except for a few countries have just sat on their behinds and done nothing but criticize the USA and encourage the terrorists (deranged zealots) and done nothing to help. Bring our men and women home. They have made us proud and accomplished their mission. I wish President Bush would wake up from this stupor he seems to be in...and bring them all home by Christmas. What a fantastic Christmas gift that would be to our country. Well anyway, I loved your poem...sorry I got off on a tangent. ♥ Linny

This is so touching and if so many think the same way then what deters the soldiers from going out there. Why? If all there is to it,it is a call taken perforce whence they joined the defence forces..thinking they were going to defend the country not invade...the world is small and we need love and peace to be harboured nurtured....against the collective forces of evil...why cant we work clandestinely towards peace?
Why cant intelligence agencies send spies to spread peace?==Shubs -
Important
I've been getting poems like these in my e-mail, chain e-mails, and I have to say- Yours is a lot better!! Whether or not we "lose face" by pulling out is no longer important! (It never was important.) So many soldiers have died for no reason, and keeping the rest there is not "honoring" the ones who died! Sorry, for the tangent; nice poem, maybe you should circulate it. Then I wouldn't have to read any more "OuR sOlDjErS aRe DyInG fOr Us!!!!!!!!!"
Happy Thursday

Wonderful write Sandy... Our soldiers are so mighty and brave. We are blessed to have such teriffic guys and gals to protect our rights as a country. They need our love and support. This was a wonderful tribute.
Always,
Melanie

beautifully done
it's a sentiment echoed far and wide.
to me this is a poem of strength and support...holds a good rhyme too...
i applaud the poet and the poem
-
Amen and amen!!! I'm proud of the soldiers and what they are doing but I pray the time will come soon that they can return home to their families. Everybody suffers in wartime-those left behind, as well. Well written-I love patriotic poems!!!
-
good
GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS, yes, yes, yes, and the object of war of course is to survive, I (and I hope we all of us) will pray to bring them home as soon as it is possible, because we know that they are there protecting us and our way of life. My time in the desert reflects much of what you said here. Add in the mulling of those around us, military and civilian, the sounds and sights of vehicle and the bustling of life around us, and you’ll have an accurate picture. Bring them home when the job is done and pray, the crazies don’t follow them here!!!! Image and Visions….. -
This is a little simplistic and the rhythm could be better, but I definitely agree with the sentiment. God bless our troops, and may they all come home safe and sound!
-
bring them ALL home soon US or UK any that are serving and risking their lives for thier fello human being well done a wonderful write xx Cheryl
