a father but not a dad

A FATHER BUT NOT A DAD

I'm sorry you missed out when I went to school for the 1st time,
And you didn't have me tell you that you were all mine,
I'm sorry you weren't there to take me to the mall,
And you weren't there to tell me I have to stand tall,
Sorry you weren't the one I saw when I came out of my play,
Or the one I'd run to when I had a bad day,
I'm sorry you didn't hear me sing, you'd have been so proud,
And you weren't there to lift me up on a cloud,
Sorry you weren't there to tell me there's nothing to fear,
But then again you should have been here,
I'm sorry you weren't the one to teach me to ride a bike,
Or the one who took me on my first hike,
I'm sorry you weren't the one who carried me on his back,
Or the one who held me tight when strength is what I lacked,
I'm sorry you weren't the one to hold me when I cried,
Or tell me I did great when I really tried,
I'm sorry you were never there to teach me how to cook,
Or there at night to read me my favorite book,
I'm sorry me as a daughter is what you never had,
You will always be my father, but you will never be my dad.

this is something i would tell my father actually. he has never really been there for me and now i feel slightly forgotten and abandoned as a daughter. well, great write and i hope your father realizes all that he has already missed out on.

Clearly very apologetic. I am always stuck when it comes to apologies. I have always had this apology in my head to my family and sometimes I sing it to myself. This is a very brave and fortright piece. Tony.

I always wanted to see a poem like this. I'm glad that someone else sees the difference between a father and a dad. The last two lines were beautiful. I wish i could say more- just know that I completely agree. (:

I think many people can relate to this poem. This is very well written and has an awesome flow. I think that if you wanted to improve on this, you should remove some of the commas and put other punctuation in. But on the whole, it's really great. Later days.

Nice. Tht`s very sad. I can relate to it, and I bet some others can too.
