I tried to hold a comet by its tail - it can't be done.
I tried to stop the sun's evaporation of the dew.
I tried to love another but I couldn't.. She's not you.
I tried to banish storm clouds with the movement of my hand.
I tried to learn the answers to what I don't understand.
I tried to find the Golden Fleece - the Holy Grail, too...
I tried to love another but I couldn't.. She's not you.
It seems my life is filled with quests that I cannot attain
Like stopping leaves from falling or abolishment of pain..
Trying to find Nirvana where dreams really can come true...
Trying to find a woman I can love as I loved you.
So I'll keep chasing rainbows with my arms held open wide.
Perhaps I'll find a comet that will take me for a ride.
One day I'll banish storm clouds - paint the sky in shades of blue
But there won't be another I will love as I loved you.

A memory will sometimes sleep, yet in a dream reside.
The dawn comes, another day, where old tender thoughts abide.
Should romance come again, and willingly play the game,
Return, a homing pigeon, on wings from whence it came,
Old ties may bind forever, hide heart and soul away ~
Till love comes softly knocking... unlocks Forever
and a day!"

Beautiful
This is really sweet without being overly soppy. I think not going overboard with the sentiment in poems like this is quite hard. -
Awwww this is so very touching, and very sweet. You have done a remarkable job and put a smile on my face. Congrats on your silver trophy.
-
Amazing
very amazing sooo beatiful i'm speechless -
Yes, the words "She's not you" says it all. Thank you very much for enjoying and responding, miss
-
this is such a sad yet beautiful write...
I love the way you keep repeating the lines: "I tried to love another but I couldn't.. She's not you."
It really portrays the pure love that you must feel for this woman.
-
Hi, Pam! Sorry you have been feeling down lately. You know that you are always welcome here! It's great to hear from you and I appreciate your kind words...please stick around
-
I became discouraged so I haven't been on in a long time -- tonight I remembered how much I always enjoyed your poetry before and wanted to see all the new things you've written in the last several months. As always, I wasn't disappointed! Reading your work is worth keeping my subscription active! Don't every stop writing!
~ Pam -
'Cause you haven't realized you deserved better, they weren't worthy of you.
-
hmmm...if it's their loss, how come I'm the one not smiling??
Thank you, miss...and I'll keep chasin' them!
-
Oh my gosh!
Yes.. beautiful, poignant and a bit too close to the nerve. Reminds me of a song sung by Jane Olivor, "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows".
Sadly, some people are too afraid of and can't accept the 'real deal' when it comes along.. Their loss, not yours.

Ironfeather, comments like yours keep me writing. I appreciate your kind words

Not enough superlatives!
Balladeer -- when I see your name on a poem I always expect to find great work -- but, I am always suroprised at just HOW good it turns out to be! This is superb! (Naturally!) -
I had to visit this again, loving the sentiment. We should remember what is good over the lesser in life. Heaven knows there are enough inequities to sometimes bring us to our knees in humility, but love should outweigh them all!
-
I read this to a few friends and they all loved it and asked for a copy. You're right - our memories play tricks on us. We think back on some old love remembering only the good stuff and forgetting the rest. After all, if everything was perfect, we wouldn't have let her get away, right? lol The mind turns stones into diamonds if given enough time.
I still haven't had a chance to pitch that cartoon idea to anyone out here, but I will!
Take care buddy

How very beautiful. Aint we all chasing rainbows. Everyone with his own goal. While we are on our hunt to achieve our dreams. Some for earthly posesions some for respect , love or just a dream. To much we forget the people around us because chasing rainbows makes us blind for the real beauty that is in our reach. A very well told story here Greetings from Holland, and good luck in the contest Herman

Klassy, I';ve given up on rainbows but i wouldn't turn down the pot of gold!
I've missed our talks...hopefully we can get our schedules together and catch up on the gossip. Thank you, miss, for your wonderful reply
-
Nicole, such a sweet reply and i thank you for it. If a woman would be foolish for turning it down, then there is a very foolish woman out there running amok!!
Such is life....best to you
-
Liz, I thank you for your kind reply and i'm glad (or sad for you) that you can relate to it
I wish you the best...
-
Thank you, Becky. No, it's not impossible....time has a way of toning things down after a while - but sure is hard getting to that part! They say a pereson will do anything for someone they once loved - except love them again. Theree's truth in that. Enjoy the memories - and move on.
-
That ole heart certainly does get locked in the past...damn thing! Probably if I were to see her now I would think "What did I see in her????" but the picture I keep in my mind is one of perfection....thanks, Mark. Good to see ya!
-
Thank you, Dee...yes, we certainly do have that one special one we will never forget, don't we? God knows I've tried!!!!
-
My thanks to you, Robin....nice to see your name again and I know that any praise from you is high praise indeed and I appreciate it. As always, I wish you the best....

This simply MUST win the contest - however, I've found to my own cost that ability is not necessarilly important!
Kind regards,
Robin. -
Old friend, this is one of the most beautiful poems I have ever read, without a shadow of doubt.
It's worthy of publication in any anthology.
I could not recommend changing one single word.
That in itself is testament to your skills (not that I am the champion of poets, just that I usually find fault).
Have a thoroughly deserved applause.
Robin. -
This is a classic, Michael ..... I think we all have one love that will be with us forever, one which kinda lingers in the back of our hearts and minds, pokes it's bittersweet memories out every once in awhile, no matter what life and love has brought us since then.
You've done a wonderful job with this piece. It's poignancy tugs at the heart strings. The repition of, 'She's not you' and the final line, really bring out the essence of the whole poem.
Congratulations on the Silver trophy
luv and
Dee

Very lovely, sir! I agree with Angel Goddess--any woman -would- be foolish to stay away from you. Lovely rhyme pattern, also.
~Amanda -
Oh my...this is beautiful. I think that any woman would be foolish to turn their back on such powerful love. I'm jealous, actually. I love the way you laid this out. I felt like I was right there with all of this emotion just pouring out of me. You're a really talented writer, and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work. Much love to you and yours,
Nicole

very beautifully written Balladeer...I have to admit even I "awww-ed" when I read this one. very sweet, moving and the message somehow being all impossibilities are possible. glad I was able to read this poem and make comment!

A+
Wow, awesome use of emotion, I think that you have some success in your future, Good luck to you! -
This is something I could have written myself once; I feel connected to this piece in some small way because of my past experiences. The entire piece is perfect - the imagery, the word usage, the flow and meter. You've brilliantly captured the heartsick feeling one has after losing someone they truly loved. - Liz
-
There is passion, there is dream and romantic feeling this post...I liked it much.
-
respect
nice fantasy imagery, maybe a little sweet for my bitter taste. -
very well written. i know the feeling too well. would be nice if we could see the future, save a lot of stuffing around and a lot of heart aches.
-
BRILLIANT
You never cease to amaze me, Michael. This is one of the most romantic and lovelorn poems I've ever read. Truly classic. Maybe it hit me so hard because I know this feeling so well. It does seem like we only get one great love in our lives sometimes. Though we may know intellectually that love is available to anyone anytime as long as they don't hide from the world in a dark room, the heart is stubborn and tends to get locked in the past, doesn't it?
Great work, my friend. I hope you're happy and well.

Sweetness
Very sad and very beautiful. -
Greaet verese here - very creative thinking, but one can't tell the future - there could be another one coming another time - whoknows?
-
simply beautiful
This is very heartfelt. I am going through a similar time myself, and believe me i know it sucks. you write about it so well, comparing all of the things that are physically impossible for any person to do to falling in love again after losing somoene you loved so much. im beginning to think it is impossible as well. good luck, i hope you are able to find someone that makes you as happy as she once did.great write, i enjoyed every bit of it!~becky -
Wow, this is really good, I simply love it. A lot of meaning and it is just stunning. Wonderful job, and keep it up.
-
Wow, very beautiful. I loved the use of words, of the images. She was a very lucky girl, to have someone like you - that's for sure. This flowed well, and was painful, and oh so beautiful at the same time. Perfection.
-
All I can say is she's a lucky woman. I've hoped for this man all my life, I've wished for this kind of love. She was very lucky indeed to have had that experience. Sounds like she didn't realize what she had, pity. Beautiful poem.

Awww! I have to agree with Kimberly that these sentiments are not that common any more. These words are to be treasured and I hope that when love next comes, it has rainbows all its own!

If you never hear those words, Kimberly, then there are a lot of idiotic men out there....you deserve them
-
I don't think I will ever hear words such as this spoken, so I will throroughly revel in your poem instead. I just don't think people take commitment serious anymore. Relationships are too easy to get into and out of. I love what you have here and long to one day hear what I doubt I will ever hear... This is beautiful hun. Thank you for entering my contest and good luck!
