No Reason Why

My lifeblood chills at every cry,
though same, your silence stills my heart --
knowing soon that ye shall pass,
a fresh life doomed to soon depart.
Born weeping 'twixt a pallid sky
with mother gone (no reason why) --
and now ye lie inside this box,
begging mercy breaks the locks;
we draw a veil to dim the light
against your newborn eyes --
as you crawl without your sight,
with no control ahead what lies.
So shriek and weep to count the sheep
that calmly lull thee to a sleep --
now follow angels' lullaby,
soon baby's gone, no reason why.

Author notes

Well...this was written about a newborn kitten that we had found and were taking care of. We tried everything but we couldn't get him to feed, so basically we just comforted and loved him for the few days before he eventually passed away. Hearing and watching this was painful on many levels.
