We tip toe on floor boards under a dark silent cloud.
Breathe shallow breaths as to not make a sound
Fight the emotions which take us up and then down.
Like wounded stalked animals we cautiously pace
By the way my name's Anne, and I live in the annex
Behind the bookcase.
A room well hidden at my fathers work place
We don't leave the building, we don't leave a trace.
The food and necessities are all brought by hand
By good friends who love us and do all that they can.
still I yearn for fresh air and to feel its embrace
By the way my name's Anne, and I live in the annex
Behind the bookcase.
Our moods are contagious such depression and fear
We struggle to listen and pretend we can hear.
Yesterdays laughter as it cuts sharp like a knife
The sound of the traffic and the movement of life.
The echo's of freedom are dislodged out of place
By the way my name's Anne, and I live in the annex
Behind the bookcase.
In this room that I share with family and friends
I must live like a prisoner till this bitter war ends.
So I've taken up writing to pass the hours away
It's a book with no title, though I may name it one day.
A little girls diary of love, hope and grace.
By the way did I tell you my name,it's Anne Frank
And I lived in the annex
Behind the bookcase.
Anne Frank
The hiding place is located in an empty section of the building owned by Otto Frank's company. While business continues, as usual, in the front part of the building, there are people hiding in the annex out back. Before too long, the entrance to the Secret Annex is concealed behind a movable bookcase.
Author notes
Anne Frank--her remarkable diary touched the hearts of so many people, one brave little girl, who's life ended in one of the many concentration camps.
This is my favourite poem because the diary of Anne Frank is the only book that has ever made me cry.

*shivers* I haven't read the book but I have heard a lot about it and I felt that you have portrayed it wonderfully with the haunting emotions of depression and fear.
Also I loved the repetiveness of;
By the way my name's Anne, and I live in the attic
Behind the bookcase.
it made the poem stand up on a personal level.
A wonderful write and I wish you all the best on the contest.

I have read her diary last year and and I have been dealing a lot with the Nazi time since then...
The fact that pictures from that time (like the one you used) still exist make it even more real...
I love how you started this and slowly lead the leader to the fact that you are writing a poem from Anny Frank's point of view.
You told the story in a way that's easy to relate to.
I love poems like this, thank you for entering my contest!
And keep on writing!
Annie

OOH one of my fav stories, I played Mrs Frank in our HS version of th e play. this is a wonderful rendition of the story and one I am sure Anne wouold be proud of herself! As it stands now, unless we hear otherwise, it may be too long for the book. But do not despair yet, we have to hear Kevins take yet.
Best of luck in this and all of your endeavors.

Anne Frank was a wonderful example of strength and fortitude amidst chaos and despair. This poem was a beautifully, touching tribute.
Thanks for entering,

It is very touching. Now you must read 'Man's Search For Meaning'. Thank you for your wonderful entry.

A beautiful tribute to such a dear soul. I am familiar with her story and it is one to never be forgotten. With writes such as yours it will keep her memory and spirit alive. I knew who you were speaking of with the first mention of her name. Maybe because her story is fresh on my mind from recently seeing the film Freedom Writers in which her story inspires some teenage gang members to do more with their life.

Thank you
This is exactly what i was looking for. up untill it said anne frank i was a lil lost, thinking it was an introspective piece. i know very lil about anne frank but because of this poem inow know more than i did before, as well as it should, it gave me pause to think over it.

The diary of Anne Frank is read all over the world, and I'm sure it's one of the most famous in the world too. I recommend you add it to your list of books to read if you want something to think about---the book will surly get you thinking. Thank you very much for your comments.

Anne Frank deserves this tribute. You have written this as if you knew her personally, like you were there hiding with this frightened girl. Her diary reveals an account that I wish she never had to experience. Your imagery causes the reader to see what must have been extremely hard to comprehend. This is excellent!
You are very astute in your rhyming ability. See if you'd be interested in learning a "new form" which I recently developed. Hope to see you there.

Thank you very much. I must admit--this is the only book I've read that made me cry. You say you are reading it now, by the time you get to the end you will feel that you know Ann and her family personally, and that's why it will have such an impact on you, it just made me feel grateful for the freedom I have. I'm pleased you liked this entry and thanks again for your comments.

I was extremely moved by your poem. My daughters and I are reading Anne Frank right now and so I found it compelling to receive an entry about her life (which I didn't really expect). The refrain of "By the way, my name's Anne and I live in the attic, Behind the bookcase." is so eerily fascinating -- it seems to have several layers of meaning. Thank you very much for this thoughtful tribute.
-
Very well written piece which poetically portrayed the isolation of Anne and her family and friends.I believe she named her diary "Kitty" as if it were a friend, which indeed it must have become a friend to her as a means of releasing her thoughts and emotions and sharing her normal emotions re growing up to.God bless her and everyone that died and those that survived that have to live with their memories.
-
This is an absolutly amazing poem. It made me cry. Anne Frank's Diary touched me as well. You are a trmendously talented poet. Good luck in my contest.

Thank you very much for your lovely comments. M y daughter took me to the theatre to see a very fine production of The Life Of Anne Frank you could hear the sniffles all around the theatre, and at the end a huge bright beam like a search light they had in the camps, was thrown across the audience scanning each row, you could clearly see how many tears were shed that night, I cried when I read the book too. I'm pleased that you appreciated this work.

very good
I really loved this poem, it is beautiful. I have read the book, many times and seen the movies, yes movies, there is an older one and a remake. to try and understand the times she lived in and the horrors she went through is just uncomprehensible for most of us. you put her life into a beautiful poem for which you should be very proud. -

.
-
reminds me of those books about the kids hidden in the attick..I can't remember them for the moment.. but anyway old timers aside LOL I really liked it.
-
Thankyou very much---i could have gone on much longer but didn't want to over do it!---i'm pleased you lked it. thanks again. shaz xx
-
I like this! Especially the way the last 2 lines are repeated each time. It kinda jolts you back to remembering just who is talking. I did find it hard to "flow" with some of the rhyming, as if the sentences are too long or don't match or something? I think basically what erynwynd was saying! But it doesn't detract from the poem too much and the whole thing still makes sense!
-
i knew knew knew i wanted this to be an Anne Frank poem, and you did so very well. reminded me so much to another poem I had written taking up on this Anne Frank inspiration...speaking of her eating the luxury of strawberries in the hidden-away attic. both you and this writer had very similar styles and a very powerful inspiration. Good write!!!
-
Liked this poem about a very famous littel girl. Her story is so poignant, as is her history. You have done justice to this. Good write.
-
thankyou so much for your comments i appreciate them, and thanks for taking the time to read. shaz xx

Well Done
Good work, portrays the hardships Anne faced. you did an excellent job of rhyming without a loss of flow for the most part. The last stanza has some lines that seem forced though.
"So I've taken to writing, not much, just a few lines
A book with no title, though I'm sure it will in due time"
Those lines seem a bit choppy, and the last lines should probably say and I lived in the attic, behind the bookcase. You seem to be missing that extra word that gives grammar and flow. Although I do suspect this to be a typo. Keep on writing always.
