Aspen Gone

The toils of life
The pleasures and pain.

It wears you away
Like the wind and the rain.

Broken, defeated
A broken stump.

Once you were a beautiful aspen
Graceful and green.

Now, only the memories remain
Glowing soft and warm.

Ever feel a warm fire?
A cool stream?

That's what your like
even with your beauty stripped away.

The memories remain
The soul survives.

But you're gone,
All the same.

Author notes

These kinds of thoughts sometimes occupy my mind when I can't focus on something else.  Heh, I'm usually such a happy person, and yet there's this darkness lurking on the edge of my consciousness...Heh, well writing this didn't make it go away, and it didn't really express my feelings either...I guess it's simply something created from the void that needed to be written.
