Is she happy?
Is her sister Joy?
Or is she some sinister
Misnomer out to eat your lunch?
Strip all of us to nothing but our soul
And you will find us naught
But flesh and blood
And full of imperfection
Regardless of the category we are stuffed into.
Do I like Gays?
Of course, I do.
It is a lovely name for lovely girls
With sisters named Joy.
Oh. You meant something else?
Sorry, I can't hear you over the
Clatter of stereotypical sortings
Of each being into their class.
Lord knows, we have to get the labels right
Or someone won't know who they are.

Basically my statement against stereotypes and keeping people in their places so to speak. It was in response to the question --Do you like gays? My normal response is yes I like people very much. Need I mention that labels are a pet peeve of mine?
By the way, I had a friend from Jr High whose name is Gay and whose sisters name is Joy.

It is amazing what parents name their children these days

Thanks so much for the comments. I really did have friends in Jr. High named Gay and Joy and they were sisters.
I truly dislike labeling people based on the worlds stereotypical judgements of them. And I certainly don't have to even agree with someones lifestyle to appreciate them for the wonderful human beings they are. I feel it is truly none of my buissiness what a persons preferences are. I don't think it is my job to judge them, label them and stick them in a box. Fortunately, my Mom always taught me to look for the good in people and my spirituality has taught me to judge only as I would like to be judged.
We humans, with all our imperfections would surely cry for mercy rather than a warped sense of justice
Thanks again for the comment. -
yes, deff i strongly agree with you here, it shouldn't be about whether or not we hate gays, it should be moving beyond discrimination at all... many times while discussing homosexuality, i've had people rant at my words because i talked about gay people as being 'differant' from 'normal' people... i just wish we could see that 'differant' shouldn't be an insulting term to apply to someone, and the same with saying someone isn't normal... i would never mean that as an insult, it isn't a negative comment.
well i wish i could applaud this more, you're got it perfectly.
yeh. do i like gays. like we can group them all together and decide to love or hate them all, just based on that...
thanks for this write, it was well put, something i've been unable to put into words. congrats. -
I prefered it when Gay meant happy or as you say a girls name and Homosexual meant just that, a lot less confusing, mind you seems things aren't normal unless they are all muddled up!
An interesting read, you just got to have those labels, if you don't have labels how you going to put people in the right box

this is a wonderful poem great comparison

Fabulous
Its tragic the way people rely on labels to describe other people "oh he's goth" "oh shes gay"
this was cute

Thanks so much for the comments and applause. I am glad the touch of humor was appreciated. We human types take ourselves so very seriously that sometimes we get nothing done in the realm of human relations that is actually intelligent.
Perhaps I will get around to being judgemental of both sides of the fence someday when I wake up perfect

i liked this poem. i thought it was cute... the way you have an innocent look to it... you don't bother with the stereotypical meaning of ';gay'... i thought the whole gay and joy thing added a comical appeal to this piece [even if it was based on a true story lol] good work!!
good luck in that contest...

3 old applause
