Today after I got offline
And the phone was free
I picked it up with hopeful hands
There'd be a message for me.
Short beeping tones assailed my ears
I pressed "C", then "B", then one.
The tears cascaded from my eyes
As soon as the message begun.
"Angel?" came the ten'tive voice
"Angel, love!" said he
"I see I've gotten your machine
Though I wished that it were thee.
I'm alive! I'm safe! I've nary a scratch
And the other Vets with me!
Were sheltered in the elementary school
Here in Buloxi!"
I cried, I laughed, I praised the Lord
Alone in my living room!
And, though full day, my joy-filled heart
Would of lite the darkest gloom.
Buloxi is no more, it seems
Nor Gulfport o so fair,
And yet my boys, to my great joy,
They all survived down there.
The radio station I was helping them form,
(We called it WFRE)
The tower’s down, the building gone,
Our dreams are memories.
But those brave combat Vets of old
Who had lived in VA dorms
Across the street from the angry sea
SURVIVED THE DESTROYING STORM!
They’ve lived!
And so their dreams live too,
And perhaps a day will come,
When their strong voices shall ring out
On WFRE, "The Voice Of Freedom".
I hope to hear them singing out
Their brave opinions strong!
But there's one sweeter refrain tis' sure
I could hear all day long.
Sweet words I could hear o'er and o'er
And o’er and o’er again-
"Angel? Angel! We are alive!
Love you! Jim, your friend."

Very compelling!
Oh my did my eyes mist up. I can only imagine what relief you must have felt.....so many are waiting and hoping for just such a call, this is bittersweet. Vets living in a dorm, and enduring such a terrible disaster as this, and needing our help and our prayers, how sad this seems. I can hear you rejoicing and yet this is still so heartwrenching, too. I know you must be glad of that call and still worrisome. Thank you for the critique, it was very kind and supportive, I appreciate that. -
