Back Down on Empty Again.....

(to the tune of Back in the Saddle Again)

I'm back down on empty again
Back down on empty again
I ain't been on full
Since I can't remember when
And I'm back down on empty again.

Them gasoline prices...
They keep getting higher.
I mean I only make
Three bucks an hour!
If I fill my tank
I got to borrow from the bank..
It's enough to turn a man's mouth sour!

I'm back down on empty again
Back down on empty again
I ain't been on full
Since I can't remember when
And I'm back down on empty again.

Gas prices here(Nova Scotia, Canada) can go from 99.9 cents a litre one day, and be $1.06 the next! (One gallon is 3.79 litres) But, these are GOOD prices. A couple months back, the price was hovering around the $1.41/9 per litre.

"I got home last night and demanded my husband take me out somewhere expensive......
he took me to a gas station."

There is a gas station near my house that raises prices every time I go by. A few months ago, they raised the price for regular gas ten cents in one hour. I went to dance and it was $3.29, and when I came back it was $3.39. My dad and I laughed all the way to the cheaper gas stations.

*laughs* I know the tune, and I'm fifteen. What does that make me? Ancient in knowledge, young at heart, or something like that, perhaps. Well, as the gas prices in NC have been anywhere from $2.85-$3.88 where I live, or around $4.50 an hour away from here, no one can really afford to buy gas. I like the idea of someone writing another set of lyrics to the old Beverly Hillbillies song. *grins and begins to sing* "Let me tell you a story of a man named John, a poor balladeer whose luck was on the run..." *iggles* My poor attempt at humor, please forgive me.

Well, I've been to the Gene Autrey Museum and being a CA native he's quite an icon...even owned the Los Angeles Dodgers and my parents listended to he and Roy Rodgers...California Cowboys & Cowgirls, haha. from that info...I must admit I might have rememembered hearing it while still in a playpen, of course.

Well, don't worry about not remembering "Back in the Saddle Again". It just means you're not old and decrepit!!! Gene Autrey used to sing t hat in his cowboy tv series....and if you don't remember Gene Autrey, that's a BIGGER reason for celebration!!! Thanks for reading.

An odd thought just hit, as I ponder that tune, can't seem to find it, in this head of mine, did I ever know it, or forgot it........the tune from 'Beverly Hillbillies.......guess you could write something to that........Just a poor balladeer his family he fed.....
I don't know what got into me......can't seem to conjure that tune up. hmmmm, I have to give up.

    Funny!

For some reason I can't recall 'I'm back in the saddle again' and instead I am hearing 'Willie Nelson's, On the road again'.......for the life of me I can't remember how that goes. Well anyhow it worked okay, I enjoyed it, the picture cracked me up!

Well, Maureen, saddles might well be our mode of transportation (on a horse, of course) if this keeps up. Hi-Yo, Silver!!

Sure, Vonny, but you blokes have it easy. Run out of gas and you can just hop on a 'roo and keep going! Plus, I think you can get at least 40 miles a gallon on a tankful of Fosters!!!

    Great to see you again!

    I honestly can't think why you're complaining
Your $3.08 is about AUD $4.03 but as we buy by the Litre not gallon and at present it's $1.24 per LITRE x 4 = $4.96 per gallon which I think represent 77 cents per litre USD. It's been a long time since our petrol was so cheap.

I wanted you to feel sorry for us Mike and then your prices won't seem so bad after all. Loved your ditty by the way!

OMG...I don't know if I should or . The poem is too funny as I am singing in tune..but the hard truth of the matter is so many people cant afford to miss work, but at the same time cant afford to go. Pretty said isn't it.
Thanks for the laugh or the cry..still figuring out which to do. maybe laugh till I cry...lol
    Love ya my friend,

Hee-hee! I'm glad someone can see some humor in all of this- a good way to cope with it!

I was trying to sing along, but I had trouble remembering the tune. Still- this was very creative! Nice write!

HAHA This is great! True, the gas price tragedy isn't funny at all... but you've done a fine job (yet again) of rewriting the words to a well-known song!! I still sing your Bugman/West Side Story lyrics as group entertainment... and remain in high demand! You're extremely talented in this area...

Also, the picture you have at the top ROCKS!!! It is an echo along the lines of what I feel every time I drive past a gas station. I used to love watching the prices fall; now it's hard for me to make eye-contact with the price boards.

Regardless, thank you so much for writing this and for writing again!

Most of us will be spending a lot less time in the saddle unless gas becomes more affordable. Enjoyed your little ditty (hard to find things to enjoy these days). Thanks for the smile!

I paid $2.97 this morning - but I saw it higher at other places, as high as $3.08. I just wonder how high it will go? But I'm just glad that my roads are still good and I have a house to come home to, its just so difficult to fathom what so many people are going through. Makes high gas prices seem kind of insignificant - but we did get a raise in our mileage at work. lol Clever write, don't know how you do it - probably the hardest part for me would be just picking the song to put the words to! But you always seem to come up with the perfect combination. (Always knew there was a bit of cowboy in you.)

This is too funny but I'll tell you what... our gas went from 3.19 a gallon for the middle grade to 3.45 this morning. They are expecting a shortage due to long weekend travelers I guess. Sheesh! I hate to even drive by a gas station right now. You've penned a really cute ditty here Mike. You is one of them there talented ones here on Allpoetry.
