Life

Life is just too short
We never know what time we have
And we take it all for granted
Later, wishing we could take it back
It seems so impossible for people who are
So loved to be taken away
And we never really grasp the meaning of life
Until after our dying day
But one thing is for sure
No-one is ever the same
After the loss of a loved one
And we feel to blame
We could've been nicer, more understanding
Maybe then they would've been here longer
We could have laughed, we could have cried
We could have loved them so much stronger
But in the end, nothing helps
They're taken away without a reason why
And all that we know to do at first
Is hang our heads and cry
Sooner or later, we get over it
And cherish the times we had
While our loved ones were on Earth
And eventually we don't feel so bad
It's a horrible experience for anyone
To know the pain that's felt
When you lose something so dear to your heart
And understand the pain others are dealt
But we can only grow from these feelings
We can only look ahead
And learn the hardest lesson
From those who are now dead
Life is very precious
The hopeful future, amazing present, resentful past
So never take a second for granted
Live your life like today is your last.

Author notes

This is dedicated to the family and friends of Justin Riegel, Lewis Smith, and David Macomber of Whitewright, Texas who were good friends of mine and taken away too soon.

I'm so sorry to hear of the freinds you've lost by having passed on. If only we all could live as if today was our last day, then regrets wouldn't haunt us. Memories can cut deep or soothe a wounded heart, and can remind us of good and loving times. Wonderfully written.

So true. This is truely one of my favorite poems. I lost my dad last year, and all the steps we did. The quote you used, is one of my favorites, because I know it's true. Anyone could die at any given time. So with that, never leave things unsaid. One of my biggest regrets is not telling my father I love him. I'm sure it always will be too. I'm sorry you lost your friends, and you have my sympathy. I hope you didn't make the same mistake I did. And if you did, make it up. Tell your friends and family now.
