Numbness of the Heart

Monotonous and dark,
like tinted church windows,
this numbness of the heart is.
Crack your neck,
try to "shake it off,"
no tactic seems to take.
Drown out the numb,
in lonely summer days,
reading science fiction,
in a dingy sun room.
The numbness in the heart,
no matter how temporary it may be,
doesn't leave so easily.
