Unmasking

when will we learn?
it is never the hand we are directed to watch -
by the Great and Powerful Oz –
that slyly slips a card up its sleeve, or
deftly dips into the hidden pocket.

when will we stop believing?
the booming voice telling us to ignore
the little man behind the curtain -
that intimidating, larger than life entity -
has always been just an ephemeral edifice of lies.

Author notes

I'm sick of the american media and its sleight of hand crap!  And, I'm sicker still of us falling for it.

Hallelujah! I think the biggest sin the U.S. media commits is the sin of omission. Partial stories with anything that doesn't fit their agenda edited out. It's hard to know what to believe anymore. Well done.

Yeah I can relate to this and sometimes it does help to air your views and have a rant, but this was an excellent poem and I thought the picture you chose plus the background really worked. It was short, but delivered a punch and was very strong and got your message across. Great work.

Love it. Short, sharp and clever I don’t think I’ve come across anyone more deft with analogy and metaphor! I remember being really quite upset when I first saw The Wizard of Oz when I was younger, and they drew back the curtain and it was just this fervent little whiskery man – it took so much of the magic out, and I always felt that ‘you already had a heart’ etc was a bit of a cop out. And a sugary one at that. Even if the film is a classic. But anyway. This is beautifully done as always, and very apt – I particularly liked the lines ‘that slyly slips a card up its sleeve, or deftly dips into the hidden pocket’. I think all media is manipulative, and this illustrates that so neatly. Lovely.

I can see that some are not fooled by the sleight of hand done by the media.
when will some ever learn that there is no honest politicians?
    and the media...
they too do things for the bucks!
    keep preaching my friend!
some of us hear you loud and clear!
Keep penning on one stroke at a time!

    I agree completely.

The media doesn't hunger for truth these days...but simple entertainment...the quick fix for ADD tube junkies...in sound bites laden with greasy fat non-news.

it is a very frustrating situation if you forget that these things will come to an end,but in the meantime there are a lot of wizards out there living in the land of oz and trying to sell us pipe dreams in the form of lottery tickets, hoping we can't tell the differece.this was such a unique way of looking at it though.you do such a great job of showing things in ways that are easier related to.this signifies both the media and the government.i see bush as thinking he is the great and powerful wizard when in actuality,he is the little man behind the curtain.

    Excellent

While the media may appear to exercise slight of hand, the truth is their hands are tied by our government having censored their reporting of catastrophic events since 1998. I clearly pick up the frustration in this exceptionally well-written piece, for I am frustrated as well.

Lots of love and hugs, B♥n

No time soon!¡ I share your frustration – it wouldn’t be so bad if they used new clever cons to trick people but it is the same tired old ruses! Talk about loosing money on the action replay!¡ You read Machiavelli and they were using the same tricks then - over five hundred years and still going strong¡!

I sometimes think we may not be the most intelligent life form on the planet – I’m currently taking lessons from blue-greens…

Hm, good thoughts. In my own circumstances, I came to see that behind the scary wolf mask is a frightened child, afraid to be weak. A lot of the appearances and aggression are based on fear, I think. Who's the biggest and baddest on the block? The one who is most afraid of losing.

Because the possibility of "me" instead of "us" acting out is a big possibility, with dire consequences.

I wasn't thinking media but government as I was reading this. Then again these days there isn't much difference.

Loved the wizard of Oz view. It fit perfect.
