Comfort Poems

Seven on Sunday evening
There’s John Betjemen reading
Some fucking poem
On the BBC.

There’s nothing more annoying,
More sickly sweet and cloying
Than a pipe and slippers poem
After tea.

Author notes

Betjemen was the poet laureate before he died.

    you are always right....!

yes, I get your meaning. sickly as you said. actually nauseating. but. if it makes sense to the writer, well, maybe it's ok. good job songs of praise is next in line, i feel. that's really why i gave up on poetry please. it was poetry "no thanks, just had some" for me!!!! xx debs

Hi, I intended the title to refer to the sort of sentimental selection that BBC listeners ask to have read out. You know the type of thing:
"I sat and gazed upon the ending of the day
And as the sun went down I heard one say
E'en as the air of evening grew quite cold
"How comforting it is to be getting old
When life's excitements past are calmed away
As evening draws to end a perfect day
    etc. etc. ad nauseum

Vic - I don't think you make mistakes!!! I was being cheeky, I know. Just got back off me holidays and had a couple too many. Forgive? But why 'comfort poems'?? I think cos it is anything but comforting to you. I would like to know what you would have wanted to hear. (actually, I like JB - such a big old grandpa......!!!)cheers, debs

Do you think that my mistake was not to classify this as 'Adult'?

what would you have preferred??! something a wee bit less middle class that got you by the balls!? Stands my cock at ten to three... etc, etc, etc. Odd, but the folks above don't seem to know the ex poet laureate at all. Could they be American???

I have to join the others and simply say that I find it difficult to comment on this piece, maybe if I knew who he was it might help.
