Beautiful Destruction

There's a certain elegance in destruction
in knowing when things have gone so wrong
it's time
to cut your losses
burn it down
so your phoenix can be reborn
when you're so disgusted
with your life
that you become someone else
reinventing your face
your history
your future
hoping that this time
you'll get it right
for once
and even if you don't
even if you just fuck it up again
you can start over
you can erase
and redraw the lines
it may hurt
in fact
you hope it hurts
because then you'll know
you're more than they say
because if you're just a pretty face
what happens after the face is
not so pretty
anymore

Author notes

This is inspired by the Chuck Palahniuk book Invisible Monsters which is, by far, my favorite of his works- and rumor has it they'll be making the movie soon.  The characters in the story are constantly reinventing their identities, each for their own reasons.  I won't spoil the ending, but it is definitely dramatic.

I like this take on my contest, when i asked for self hatred you gave me something that showed people who disliked themselves enough to constantly try and change who they are.

I will have to check out this book. It sounds interesting. The poem is really good. I love anything that involved a phoenix. That is my favourite myth...the phoenix rising out of his own ashes. The poem.... I really like it. I had it bookmarked and read it a few times. I like the flow - the imagery - the whole story to it.

Though I have never heard of that author or any of his books, I do think that he did a wonderful job on inspiring you to write this piece! This piece holds a lot of truth. After all, we have to keep restarting to find ourselves, otherwise, we will find that we won't always have those pretty face days. They will soon dissipate just like yesterday did. Sorry for my incessent rambling...etc...etc...etc.!

Keep up the great work! You are a very talented writer!

I've never read this before... but it sounds extremely interesting from the way you've written this. I like the fact that people have the courage after being broken to actually start over. I admire the fact that they are willing; however, to do so over and over is almost to deconstruct. I think I may have to go pick this up... Thanks! And good luck.

I've heard of Invisible Monsters, though never read it, and it sounds like a pretty good book. In your poem I especially liked the lines "burn it down so your phoenix can be reborn"... phoenixes, oh yeah. This was a cool write, good luck in my contest!
