Joy Stands Firm

It's Christmas morn'
I run down the stairs
Before the sun has risen.
Excitedly I open every gift
And I am happy.

It's another year.
My new toys are old.
The sun wakes me.
Slowing I get out of bed
And I am cranky.

Still I rejoice!

The project is over.
It was a great success.
A bonus has been promised.
I'm on the rise
And I am happy.

My career is over.
It was a great failure.
Promises have been broken.
I'm on the decline,
And I am angry.

Still I rejoice!

It's the end of the day.
The sun sets across the ocean.
The crashing waves make a peaceful sound.
I stand hand in hand with my love
And I am happy.

It's the end of my love.
The darkness of the night envelops the day.
The waves crash at my feet.
I stand with empty hands without my love
And I am despairing.

Still I rejoice!

Material blessings rust and are destroyed.
Successes are followed by failures.
Loves and life lasts not forever.
Happiness is fleeting,
But joy stands firm.

My treasure in heaven remains.
My salvation is secure and Christ still reigns.
His love endures forever.
Happiness is fleeting,
But joy stands firm.

Author notes

I was doing a devotional on Philippians. Much of the letter is about joy. This poem is my way of processes and expressing the truth of the lesson.

It's so foundational, but who anymore distinguishes between joy and happiness? Happiness may be determined by our circumstances, but joy is a state of heart. Powerful message... your two repeating lines could stand alone as a poem in themselves: "Happiness is fleeting, but joy stands firm." Awesome.
