beacon in the half light

arum spathe
glows incandescent
white and sinister -
but with beauty for all that -
in the half light

less a flower
than a waxen object
evoking coffins
in the sad-bereaved
and high-end florists
in the upwardly mobile

dark has fallen now
and it glows still
an almost ghostly green
tantalisingly shaped
this flower
a steely instrument
playing cool jazz

night is down now
and the arum is still
gloating and pellucid, viewed
from the safety of the kitchen window

later, much later,
I will sit and drift
outside in its come-hither
promise of the exotic

    Beautiful

You've taken me home. I'm sitting smelling the pungent, still air. Beautiful writing, words, atmosphere...Oh everything. Thanks (need to find more clappies)

look up Cocoa rosie...they make a good sound track to some dis stuff. On note of poem, I liked it. pulls you through rather than bringing the focus to certain lines, which i like.

    Very evocative

You capture the atmosphere very well, the slightly foreign whiteness of the lily outside and the complexity of its associations. I particularly enjoyed the contrasting meaning fr the recently bereaved and the upwardly mobile and the contrast between the warm indoors and the exoticism of the darkened garden. An adventure on the doorstep.
There is something very sensual about the ending. I can almost imagine the smell of the flower.
