Red

Remember when the world was so simple?
We thought we were invincible.
Standing with our arms spread
And sheer joy painting our cheeks in pink.
The wind ruffled our hair and touched our hearts.
We dared it to push us over, and laughed when it couldn't.
And like a elementary school crush, I'm resisting the urge
To push you off the swings and into this sand pit I've been living in.
What good would screaming "Na-na-na-na-na" do for me, anyway?
You could catch me if you tried, but the problem is
You won't.
Not even if I cried.
Which I have done, but not lately.
At least not over you.
Don't be deceived,
I'm still drowning in the hope that you'll fall for me again.
I just can't get close enough to stick out my leg to trip you up.
It was so much easier when responsibility and humility didn't get in the way.
Memories of us are etched into every surface in my room, my car, my heart.
School halls are lonely without your hand in mine.
Oh, don't worry-
I know I'm going to Hell.
My fate was sealed with one little conversation
And one huge yearning.
Fooling around is for fools, but they're the only ones who rush in.
Can you blame me for being sick and tired of taking my time?
I want to be irresponsible, irrepressible;
Unfortunately, I'm just barely irreconcilable.
I'd love to drown my sorrows in amber-colored bottles,
But I can't stand the taste of alcohol mixed with regret.
The sound of breaking bottles matches that of my broken heart.
The shards could cut deep,
But they still wouldn't reach the hurt.
We both know I look good in red.
Maybe I'll wear it tonight,
In memory of you and what we had.
