But I Choose Christ (Hybrid Sonnet)

In this life, most by merit often try,
Here while they know mortality draws near,
To earn their place eternally- and why?
For death's unknown is man's all-binding fear!
The Bible makes this very clear to us,
Yet man tries many sacred remedies
To reach his peak of highest holiness,
There finding most are hopeless fallacies.
But I choose Christ among this earthly strife,
For sinful man can never merit this,
Nor stand before a righteous, holy God;
Christ is the CURE- He is the GIFT of life-
His mercy offers me eternal bliss,
My sins removed through His atoning blood.

(Below are Bible verses, merely to explain this poem)
Ephesians 2:8-9~
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Titus 3:5-7~
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Isaiah 64:6~
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Psalm 1:5~
Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

Psalm 130:3~
If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

John 3:16-17~
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Hebrews 2:14-15~
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

I John 1:7b&9~
...the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Author notes

I'm a Christian!- which means that I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only begotten, virgin-born Son, Who died on the cross and shed His blood to pay the price of my sins for all eternity.

I trusted in Christ as my Saviour at the young age of twelve.  I grew up in a Christian home, so I had already learned alot ABOUT God, but I didn't make a personal choice about it until that age.  I've been striving to follow Him, and do His work ever since.

    A lovely attempt to deliver the most important message of all in sonnet form. Just to think~

    I'll know you in paradise
    you and me, with meeting eyes
    all of glory takes its place
    as we meet once face to face

    A critical review is invited

    There are a few places that I tripped on, but maybe it's been too long since I've written a sonnet. I'm not as familiar with 'abstract', but like the hybrid you've placed here!

    This is a very good write, but being the structural nature of it, I really do have to be nit-picky and tell you, that the final two lines must rhyme with each other. lol But that's it. As for the poem itself, it is very lovely, and it shows just where your beliefs lie. It's bordering on the edge of being outside the contest idea, but you kept it mellow enough that it's not in the form of a prayer. For that, I congratulate you. Thanks for entere my contest, and good luck!

    Best of wishes to you!

    this is a very good poem- not overly sentimental, just portraying clear, concise expression of why you chose Christianity. Good luck in this contest!

    This is fantasticly written I just hope and pray that it remains in the contest. You have done a great job at expressing the truth. So many people look at Christians as though we are all brain washed yet do not look at what the Bible tells us. I think it is great how you have quoted scripture at the end of this. I think you are very brave entering this contest personally I haven't got the courage that you have to enter this.

    This is interesting. I believe there are people who don't even experience the feeling of 'I can't make it' or I always fall short- I don't think that feeling is in every single person, and that's why many do not choose Christianity. But because it is the basis of Christianity, I think this is definitely the kind of people it draws. You brought this out very well, even if it wasn't what you may have intended.

    Exellent write and beautifully put. John 3:16 is one of my fav Bible verses and John is altogether my fav book of all. Did you know that John is called 'The Eagle' by scholars of Theology as he soars higher than the other gospel writers.
    I'm studying Theology on line with a university, have you thought of doing it? It has opened up the Bible to me and given me so much.
