Dear Mr. President
At the risk of ending up in a detention camp, I am going to exercise one of the few rights I hope still exists in this country, and speak my mind about your administration.
in the past five years I wave watched with horror at how little you regard that which you took an oath to uphold, namely, the U.S. Constitution.
The first assault came in the form of your "Faith-based Funds" act.
this was clearly an attempt to give some religions validation, while dismissing others. It is against the First amendment, which reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". giving taxpayer money to those churches you approve of violates this amendment.
Your PATRIOT act is in violation of the Sixth Amendment, which says "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial". It also violates the Fifth Amendment which says "no person... shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.".
Recently, the Supreme Court handed down a ruling which is in contradiction
to the Fifth Amendment "nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation"
Now you wish to add an amendment of your own, which, unlike all other constitutional amendments, is designed to take rights away for certain individuals, in a shameless attempt to toady up to Christian conservatives.
Our Constitution was written to give individuals rights, not take them away. Our Founding Fathers believed that the individual mattered, and was worth protecting. Clearly, you do not.
The "Marriage Protection Act" is ridiculous. Who's marriages are being protected? Are you really so deluded as to expect us to believe that if same-sex couples are allowed to marry, conventional couples are suddenly going to get divorced? That's ludicrous. How is gay marriage threatening anyone?
If you really want to protect marriage, why don't you look into something that actually presents an obstacle. Mine is a perfect case of that. I love my fiancee, and want to marry her, but I'm told that if I do, I lose my disability benefits, whether my spouse is working or not. So I am forced to live in sin in order to keep my meager income of 698 dollars per month coming in. I'd love to see you live on $698 per month. I seriously doubt you could.
In closing, I say this; Why don't you try reading that document you took an oath to uphold, and start acting like an American leader, instead of just another money-grubbing politician? Stop looking for people to pick on, and start thinking about how you will be compared to true American Presidents, like Washington, and Jefferson.
Sincerely
Kurt E Cook

Fight the System, My Friend!!

perhaps so, but compared to Emperor Bush, Those men were angels.

Quite a commendable letter, well thought out and makes some very valid points..in my opinion. I feel we've strayed quite a lot from the original intent of our fore fathers when they wrote the Constitution and also the Declaration of Independence. While it may be true that we've come a long way, our moral fiber should not have changed, but kept strong, our rights and expectations of our leaders should remain intact.
A good piece, Kurt
Good luck in the contest

Wow! some really well thought out criticisms. I'm not the current president can be blaimed for the supreme court's interpretation of the word "public use". Although you are dead on about giving grants to religious based organizations. Well said!
-
Wow this is a wonderful write. I love the fact that you brought up each point with a very powerful augument. I don't think very many can do that. And it is also very educating to those of us that do not get to read the paper or are unable to follow the news closly. your words are strong and there isn't even the slightest hint that you don't know anything about what your wrote. great job keep up the excelent work Blessed Be ~calentice~

back then it was okay to own slaves, and all whites were white supremacists. You can't judge 18th century people by a 21st century standard. Washington turned down an offer to be crowned king, for that he showed moral fiber. jefferson stood up to religious leaders and told them that they will not have absolute power.he had moral fiber. and Lincoln may have been a white supremacist, but he ended to institution of slavery. he had moral fiber.

I second the motion, also being a Brit, agree with thekillerinside!
-
Bravo sir and damn well said!! I am a british citizen but see in Tony Blair a man who wants to make britain the 51st state of America. No offence, my friend, but i will move to angola where at least i KNOW a democracy doesn't exist before that happens. Your arguments are extremely valid and forthright and i applaud you on your views!

well, when dealing with an idiot, you have to keep things on a purely emotional level.
-
Not so much. While it's not such a bad letter, it doesn't much feel of poetry either. For a letter it reads a little shallow on the points, more like slogans then presenting a well thought out case. That's my 2cents...and worth a little less after the government get's hold of it.

wow increadable write very well writen keep it up your an amaizing writer.
