New York City Light

City lights i figure they
sparkle all at once so they
try to see if they can
out beat the sun
they say you can see New York City lights
from a thousand miles away
so if you haven't got going
then why not start today?

but if you're not blinded by the
razzle dazzle life and high prices
and the glamorous scent of
poverty in your pocket
there's always Boston
smaller and less dense

But in the city that hasn't slept a wink
since the Empire State was raised
it looks awfully sleepy
when not a praised
it's cold seems awful bitter
when it's run out of things to say
and alas you fall harder
and make a down payment for an early pavement grave

But i have often wandered these streets
dodging blunt misconceptions
feeling quite shaky with their words beneath my feet
and whatever it holds against me
so when i part ways with the night lights
and see darkness on the way
there is no wonder why the dark is black
and the light a white-ish gray

They say you never recover from a love like
that, in tall hats and a new wave nineteen forty
state of mind
they say you walk with a limp
and you're hair is never as great
but i say
I have never seen the lights of New York City
not even from a thousand miles a way
and i never want to see them
if they make me walk away
