I want to make something beautiful before I die,
a legacy for my children.
A monument of love, and life;
they would say that the lips of God
were pressed against my eyelids in sleep.
I want the sky to remind them of my iris in the daytime
and of my pupils at night;
I want the wind to remind them
of my breath against their cheeks
and my endless whispered promises.
I want the sea to remind them of my arms,
engulfing, enfolding, rocking them to sleep;
I want the owls to remember my lullabies
and carry them to dreaming when cool darkness settles on them.
But most of all...
Most of all, I want the clouds
to write my love letter in the deep blue:
"I would have never left you if I had the choice."
