Canvas Of Your Life

If they give you lined paper, write the other way
Don't let others judgement stop you from today
The world is your canvas, paint a picture of your life
Do as you like, without others negative strife
Choose to be different, just because you can
Why want to be like others, when you can be your biggest fan
I'm not saying be shallow, or conceited in the least
But why stay within the lines because of what others think
Be country, goth, prep, anything you like, try them all
Don't be afraid to show the world who you are, stand tall
Don't let a label of what the world thinks is right
Judge what you're worth as a person, stand up and fight
The people who judge you are human, just like you
What makes their thoughts of whats right, anymore true
Color outside of the lines, dance in the rain
Why let yourself be boxed in, conformed, and plain
If we all became societies, idea of whats "right"
How beautiful of a picture, could this world paint with our life
No one in this world is just like you
the colors you paint with what you do
Be the rose among the field of grass
for the beauty it creates among the average, catches the eye
fulfill who you are, and you can reach for the sky
unique, different, expressive, in your own way
What image in the canvas of our world do you portray?

Author notes

"If they give you lined paper, write the other way."
by Juan Ramon Jiminez. This quote made me think of how naturally if given lined paper you'd write on the lines. It's what you are taught as a kid what is "proper" or "right". It made me think if everyone was or acted the way society thinks is "proper" or "right" everyone would be the same. I wanted to point out that its our differences among eachother that make this world worth living. Every person or situation in life you get in will be different because people are different. If you tried painting 10 pictures with the same paint brush with 1 color in the same box all the time, it would always look the same. What beauty or fun is that? Accepting differences is what America is supposed to be about. What our world should be about. We are all human so what makes what one person thinks anymore "right" then another human. People should be judged by who they are as a person not by how they appear. The last 2 lines of my poem is supposed to make the reader think of what part they play in the world. That their personality and choices in their life adds life and color and meaning to someone elses life creating a ripple effect. Thus as a whole every individual persons life kind of paints a picture of the world or what you leave behind. The world is your canvas what will you make of it? a confined solid color or vibrant arrangement of shapes and images to create a masterpiece?

I am very impressed not only with the rhymes and rhythm of this poem but the message you have expressed so clearly. I completely agree with your words here, we should live our lives the way we wanted it to be if we want to gain happiness and contentment. This really speaks to me as I don't like those people who judge and control other's lives. Indeed, this deserves an applause. Eris

I couldnt agree more with the poem's idea and what you want to say...Indeed,our life is not meant to be a carbon copy of someone else or to be ruled by stereotypes of this society.
I simply loved the whole thing about simply being your own true self and living life according to your own terms and not according to what someone dictates to us...
You certainly are very good at rhyming and this poem proves it The flow is quite smooth....I think it's because of the rhymes
Oh yeah, one more thing....LOVELY TITLE!It's so metaphoric and innovative
    Great job....keep writing

I simply love the whole idea of being true to one's self. You have done that in a beautiful fashion here. People are too quick to judge, it's liked seeing a beautiful lady smiling, and then exposing a chipped front tooth, is she still not as beautiful as before? As you have noticed think provoked thoughts in me, a true sign of well written poetry...Brilliant
    Peace Muddy

I really agree with you and I now how it feels to copy other people just because you are afraid that they won't like your opinion, this happened to me when i was younger and i now realise that the one person that i thought was my friend just wanted to use me! Thank you for writing this poem it is much apreciated by me!

lovely poem and it has a great moral. This is something every middle schooler and high schooler should read. I have always tried to live like this, but i'm starting HS at a pretty preppy school this year, so being myself may have just gotten a bit harder...
