To make a friend today?
Did I walk away
Without a backward glance?
Did I hear a cry for help
Pretending not to hear?
Did I shed a tear
But only for myself?
When I feel love deep inside,
Do I ask for nothing more?
Would I open my door
If a beggar stood outside?
If my friend lay gravely ill,
Would I try to ease his pain?
If I had nothing to gain,
Would I pay his bill?
How much love is enough?
Is the supply unending?
Without love for mending,
Life would be too tough.
Is love your endless quest?
Just do the best you can
To help your fellow man…
God will do the rest.

These are some great questions we all need to ask ourselves on occasion. I love your final line. While we may not love "enough" at times, there is a great comfort knowing God will always love us best. Thank you so much for sharing and good luck in the contest.

Best wishes,
~J.

These questions made me think about what I have been doing lately in my life to help those around me, and the answer is saddening. I have been striving to fulfill my needs and wants, when I should be reaching out to those around me who need what I have in excess. Thank you for the conviction, Maureen! Best of luck to you.

I am always asking myself whether I am doing my best - the better you are, the better you want to be, and the harsher the failures appear. Questions like these are meant to trouble and inspire, and you do this excellently. Best of luck!

My sweet Soul Sister, I'm so glad you liked my poem and "Somewhere over the rainbow". When I first posted this poem, I had that song embedded in the poem but it was deleted so I decided to replace it with the link to the montage.

Dear Maureen,
You have written so many beautiful poems that it must have been difficult for you to choose one that you considered your very best. I think this is a worthy choice. It carries a message which, although expressed in a personal way, is universal and abiding.
Good luck in this contest.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh R.

Simply written but very true -
Beautifully Composed!
Wonderful poem and full of feeling and warmth. I also felt a tinge of sorrow and lament as I have seen myself on both sides of this poem and know I have not always done such as you described. Hmmmm. Very nice work!
A lot was gained by reading this. Thank you.
Prysmatyk -
Thank you very much for your nice comment, Scott! 155 people have read this poem and it won a silver trophy (if I recall correctly). I really appreciate your concern (about it not getting read) and just wanted to let you know that a lot of people have read and commented on it.

don't know how i missed this one.it is lovely.ilike the form, but i especially liked the pattern of the rhymes.the message is one of hope, faith ,charity, and love.congrats on your win. -
I like your last stanza. ....Do your best;...God will do the rest...
So true. It's hard to measure how much help God wants us to give and how much he has planned on his own. We must be cautious to not enable people but as long as we love as Jesus loved...God will do the rest.
Excellent poem
Good luck on the contest,
Absinthe

Good message, Maureen. . .

Well said Maureen.
"If my friend lay gravely ill,
Would I try to ease his pain?
If I had nothing to gain,
Would I pay his bill?"
It definitely makes one think.

The more into the poem you get the deepe it gets. I like this because your questioning. Where were the answers
..lovely poem and I loved the beginning and the ending. Espcially "God will do the rest." Amen to that

-
wonderful, and I would hope that if I encountered each one of these instances that I would do my best by God. Take care, Lissa
-
Well put! I enjoyed the way you seemed to question the reader by putting it in the first person! Makes you wonder about how you travel through the world everyday and if we really are just existing or really living.
-
That's awesome and so true! You're right-so often do we forget to love our best. Even though, its so hard to remember to love like God in our world, we should remember every day and put forth effort to think not always of ourselves, but of others, and to love and try to reach out to the people around us. You never know if you just missed a chance to make a best friend so its best to try to make friends with everyone! I like your poem alot, its really inspiring.
-
Lovely and profound and full of meaning. A great poem with a good message not to mention 'MUSIC'. wow!

Maureen , This poem is the first I've read of yours. Excellent poem.

prayers ... Excellent , I'm so happy I read this piece. Good Luck

Maureen - You said it all, it's not just about yourself and it's not just about your friends, it's also about the beggar at your door or the social misfit you just passed in the hall at school. What a beautiful message and so simply portrayed! A winner in my book

'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' Your words will cause people to risk, dare, try and fly. Helping others is so needed, and going the distance is more so. Beautiful write that testifies of the truth of your own spirit, which is shining! Lovely, and the tune brought tears to my eyes. Love you, Maureen! ;)Kelly -

This is breathtaking, Maureen. The background, the music and most of all the beautiful, inspiring message. 'Greater love hath no man than he lay down his life for his friends'. I try to live by that. Giving of yourself to others breeds fulfillment. When you feel empty, give away what you need most in your own life. It will come back triplefold. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful message.

WOW! I've used that word a lot lately, but I'm really awed by all the great things I've seen on AP lately. This one is especially nice...and indeed does call for some serious self-searching.
Your rhyme scheme...That pattern is incredibly difficult for me. You made it flow easily, and the background is perfect.
