Hello. I Am of the 70's.

Hello.
I am of the 70’s.

To understand the tragedy of the 70's
you must compare it to the Sixties.

For me, that is easy-
I have an older 60’s sister-
She was part of the ‘Peace, Love, Dope’ era-
first a teenybopper coming of age with the Beatles,
with those little phonograph players and the vinyl records.

(I can still smell the tubes overheating and the warm vinyl as 'Twist and Shout'
 scratchily played through the air!)

she would come home and say ‘Yardbirds’.
I would say, ‘What?’
She would say ‘Bob Dylan’.
He already sounded like a legend to me, and this was only 1966!

So 1970 came along. I turned 15.
I already had a good dose of the 60’s- blacklight posters, basement summer parties,
something positive about it all.

Well, younger siblings will ‘oft rebel-
even against their older siblings!

So as the 70’s were ushered in
‘Peace, Love, Dope’ degenerated into ‘Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll!’,
The Beatles were replaced by Black Sabbath,
'Groovy' was misinterpreted as 'Party On, Dude'!,
and AM radio was laid to rest by FM.

The cute phonograph players of the 60's?
They transformed into $1000+ wall-smashing stereo systems!

So Jimi, Jim, and Janice* departed,
perhaps done-in by the 70’s,
or perhaps victims of the lyrics-cum-Mantra-of-the-Generation:

"the things they do look awful c-c-c-c-cold
…I hope I die before I get old!"

So there I was, in the ‘70’s,
a ‘60’s wannabe.
So I had my face pressed against the rear window,
looking back, being driven away.

As soon as I called myself a ‘hippie’,
‘they’ became ‘freaks’.
As soon as I began flashing the peace sign,
‘they’ stopped.
As soon as I grew my hair out,
‘they’ cut theirs off!

“Ahhh”, I deduced.
“I see now that this is all just a fashion show
that I am not going to win!”

So I joined the military!

Someone's got to pay for all this wild abandon!

Author notes

I would call this a suburban take.

Jimi, Jim, and Janice-
rock music icons of the mid-late 60’s
(who’s posthumous influences
lasted well into the 70’s):

Jimi Hendrix (10/27/42-9/18/70)
Jim Morrison (of the Doors) (12/8/43-7/3/71)
Janice Joplin (1/19/43-10/4/70)

At the time hallowed names.
Say them with reverence!

Bottom pic- my senior high school picture, 1972-1973.

Disclaimer on my 60's sister- much to her credit she skipped the 'dope' aspect of it- that was left to me and my younger brother! Wild were the days...

Hippies had their official funeral after the 'Summer of Love' in 1967!

Authentic 70's conversation:
"Wayne, your rock album only has six song. You got gypped! My Motown album has 18!"
"But Bonnie, their both 40 minutes..."

So the seventies had it's face pressed against the glass, looking back at the 60's, for the longest time.

I'm not comfortable with "freak",but poeple pen names on what's not understood I suppose. Here, have a flower, wear it in peace 70's child.Love is all,all is love. And don't feel left out in the cold of the slow lane.I,by the time I could afford them was called a whore upon arrival at school one day.Because black lace panty hose were old hat by the time I had a pair. Not wanting to be heckled all day.I removed them and way exposing far more then a fashion statement. But no one knew, thank God!~~Suseann

Oddly enough, I became interested in poetry through the works of James Douglas Morrison -- his book, "Lords and New Creatures" made a great impact on me. Poetry could be....rock.

Geez...that is one 70s kinda photograph. GRIN

I don't recall the 60s -- too young to have it make a great impact(though I do recall tuning into Star Trek a few times) -- but do remember the 70s as some kind of Rock'n'Roll blur...ending with the disco dance of abandonment. I still (shhhh) have a fondness for that tribal pulsing beat with flashing lights.

Well said Sir. The 70s still live...somewhere in those dark recesses of our aging minds.

Yes, Swan, I sympathize with your radio woes! I grew up around Detroit, and grew so sick of Motown that when Ted Nugent and his acid rock came along it was like a breath of fresh air!

Loved it could tell you were there. Here in britain our radio was pretty dire, after about 10pm it was pirate radio or nothing, enless you count radio luxembourg, and the reception was crap.Shame we lost so many of the greats.

The 60's did not die kid! I'm still here. And most 60's bands still rocked in the 70's,some still do.Stone's are doing a U.S.A. SUMMER TOUR this summer. And ZEPPLIN ROCKED! Not a word in here about the protests against the war.But you were a 70's child, and the wide tie and hair shoulder legnth attest to the fact.PEACE!AND LOVE!~~Suseann

Ya got 4 years on me, but I too remember the long hair and having to wear a headband (bandana) to keep it out of my eyes - oh yeah and you didn't have to worry about what color it was! The old bands rocked and still do these days. Thanks for detour to the road back then.
Oh yeah - remember, if it doesn't glow in the dark, it's not a real radio??

I see, the times before I was born are amazingly scary and foreign before me. Thank you for relating the past of my parents. You are super-solid, yo!

Hey this is a excellent entry I like how you brought the 60s in with this and how it tied into the 70s. Even through the changes how the 60s brought the 70s out only it didn't last and all those efforts as you spoke to try and be a part of it changed and thats true today things are still changing. Still somethings remain the same and memories aren't forgotten of how it was back then.
Very nice photo of yourself thanks so much for your entry.

Tsk tsk tsk! Looks up to the sky What have I gotten myself married to?????? LOL! Great job; very interesting. I have to say that although I'm too young to know the 60's or 70's, I do have to agree with your piece and great choices of icons; Jimi, Jim and Janice rock still today! And I don't want to hear anything different! LOL! Great write!
