Far Away

Missing image
Far away from the bickering
Of the left and the right,
The posturing of politicians,
The desire to understand evil,
The lies told by our enemies
And the gullibility of those who believe them,
Stands the soldier,
Young and proud,
Eyes full of fire and conviction,
With arms strong enough to crush the enemy
And gentle enough to carry a child to safety.

Far away from the mayhem on the surface
Caused by those free from danger,
Free to speak out against their country,
Free to fearlessly slander their President,
Sleeping under the blanket of safety
Which freedom provides,
Stands the soldier
Protecting that freedom,
Fighting and dying
For those who support his cause
And for those who don’t.
Living daily with a kind of courage
Few will ever know;
The courage that comes from knowing
That he could die at any moment
For something larger than himself.

Beneath all the anger and confusion,
The yelling and protesting,
The demonstrations and flag-burning,
We who can’t agree on anything,
Who refer to each other as traitors or sheep,
All share the same wish for a better world,
Though we may differ on how to create it.

None of us want this war.
Necessary and desirable are not the same thing.

So please, soldier, forgive us.
We are sometimes blinded by grief
And confused by so many voices.
Before all this began,
We were not used to so much pain.
We were not used to such terrible sights.
We were not so familiar with evil.
But most of all, we were not willing
To have our loved ones taken from us,
Not for any reason.
We didn't want to have to steel our hearts this way.

And though we may curse each other;
Though we may disagree
About what you’re fighting for,
We are all joined by one thing ~
Our love for you.
And we all share the same dream ~
To see all this horror end, somehow,
And to welcome you finally, safely, home.

Thank you Mark for this complete write, full of vivid images, and the care and the concern it reveals, the pain everything. Pictures are painful. Thanks for sharing this, Lady stone, seems to be sending this to the troops and I am sure this will touch them in the biggest way possible.

    Love always,
    Lencio

Mark, you did an absolutely beautiful job on this write my friend. It is so full of emotion and concern for our troops, this is definitely an "eye opener" for some that just don't understand what is really going on in this world and the loss that happens everyday. Keep up the awsome writes buddy. I hope all is well with you. Take care....GETS

Thanks, Vilanger. I tried to get away from the bickering and side-taking about the war and concentrate on what unites both sides - love and concern for the soldiers. No sane person wants war, but some think ridding the world of evil men is one of the hard necessities of life, and some think all wars only add fuel to the fire. I like to see bad men taken out, but of course, I wish there was a better way and the human family could finally get beyond war. I guess it's in our nature to fight. There are no easy answers.

Please give my best wishes to Danny, and thank him for me for all he has done. I hope he is fully healed soon, inside and out.

War begins with discrimination, ends in a judgment against love of life. My eyes well with tears, too. When will the devastation end? When will the world choose life? When will there be enough life for everybody? Like John, my eyes fill with tears reading this, because humanity is at stake. Beautifully and thoughtfully penned, Mark. Karen

    Hi Teague,

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

Re. my use of the word "steel", it was intentional. It's another word for "harden" but not exactly. - i.e., "We didn't want to have to steel our hearts this way." In this context, "harden" wouldn't have been the right word because it implies a shutting off of emotion. I chose the word "steel" because fighting a war, and losing loved ones in one, requires a lot more of us than just hardening our hearts, as we all know now. It's a kind of bracing for the unexpected, unpredictable, terribly sad events that are a daily occurrence in war and not losing our own humanity in the process.

    Thanks again,

    Mark

I am gobsmacked. my jaw is almost on the ground. this is so deep and really makes you think about all of the, mayhem, that is going on. I really hate how it has evolved into war, it just sucks. I am (almost) lucky I do not know anyone (personally) who is over there, but it's still going on, no one is lucky. The evil you were talking about, I believe is the ones making the war, in my eyes, partly is the politicians and gorvernment people. Anyway, great write, as usual.

Thanks, Ashley. I'm just leaving work at the moment but I'd love to chat with you sometime, too. I'm glad you liked my poem. Again, please tell your brother that Mark Rickerby says, "Thank you for my freedom." It's okay with me if he says, "Who??" lol He's very lucky to have such a loving and thoughtful sister. I'm sure your gesture of holding this contest in his honor, and the poems in it will mean a lot to him.

    Take care,

    Mark

    Mark,
Thank you so much for writing this. This was so beautiful, amazing and inspiring. I do agree. I don't think anybody wants war. And I think everybody wants freedom. Just think. Our freedom comes from the price of another loosing their freedom. The dead don't have their freedom. But they have an honorable mention and a medal because they died fighting for something they not only beleived in but cared for. Their freedom and their country. I am personally proud of my brother for going overseas. Each person counts. No matter what their job is in the military. I'm so proud of Michael.
Thank you for entering my contest.
    God Bless
    ~Ashley~

Wow it just goes to show that there is passion in war, it is just hidden from the human eye under all of the bloodshed. You show this in your poem very fluently expresssing your thoughts and emotions to what they truly are. Showing to the people in a slow detailed way war does not always have to be about fighting ans that it can be about helping people without having to fight.
    God Bless,
    Russ

Why it's always got to be like this. Thanks for the picture, I hope it gets to those that really need to see it.

It's got the most beautiful ending and I loved these lines:

None of us want this war.
Necessary and desirable are not the same thing.

    Thanks for sharing

Mark, it’s amazing how hard it is to type when you have tears welling up in your eyes. But here I am doing just that. You always have a way of using your words to punch a hole through the darkness of reality and shed light. I salute you for your convictions and strength you consistently show with your writes my friend.

Mark, From the moment this popped up on my scream you had my heart. I have a similiar photo of a cousin in Vietnam holding a bleeding and crying infant. My cousin did not come back, only the picture. I was 9 at the time and I still pray for them both.

Your poem teaches a lesson, that unfortunately we have not learned. Keep writing and encouraging peace. Maybe someday we will stop repeating history!!!

Wow this is a very deep piece. War is very hard on every one, especially the soilders and their families. This piece shows the realities of what war does, with the glimmer of hope for us all. We are all touched by this war in different ways, I have many friends serving in Iraq right now and all I can do is continue to pray for their safe return. The picture you used is such a sad reminder of the innocent victims of this war. Great piece.

I agree with you, that thought we have different views on this war, we come together, with the love for our soilders. I think anyone who protests this war has a great lesson to learn, I dont believe that war is any way a good thing, but at times it has been the only course of action. Whether or not we agree with this president, we must understand, that we would not be a free nation today, if many men and women hadnt fought to keep us safe.

This is very well written and touched my heart.

Wow! This is really a wonderful piece, priceless within its only expression of love and support. I only wish I was blessed to see my uncle come home, to be able to know him but sadly he died in the Vietnam War before I was even thought of. Hopefully my friends that are in Iraq come home safely. Very heartwarming poem here ... ---Sara

You have taken this grevious situation and fairly looked at both sides with a keen eye. For me, the soldiers are the most important part of this war. No matter my political stance, I so want each one of those young men and women that are putting their lives on the line daily to be safe.

As much as we band tohether in protest, we should stand together in a harmony of peace and support. My brother fought in Viet Nam and was blessed to come back safely. He has some tremors from that autrocity but he is basically fine. I wish the same for the soldiers fighting in Iraq and pray that this war does not last nearly as long as Nam did.

Your poetry is filled with the realities of war and gives an outringing of hope. The best to you in this challenge and life's challenge.

    Bless you Mark,
    Renee

I suppose I miss simpler times past when supporting our troops meant supporting our way of life and a just war. Perhapse I just grew old enough to decide that war isn't inherently just. And in fact, in such conflicts everyone must lose eventually and that simply by definition. That having been said, my heart goes out to those who died or were wounded physically, emotionally or spiritually and their families as well as to the rest of the collateral casualties. And most certainly, I do wish each and every soldier a safe return home and look forward to a day when no one anywhere need worry about the safety of their loved ones in distant lands.

By the way, this was a well thought out and composed write.

    Peace always,

    ~RJ~
